I had the opportunity for a VERY rare lie-in today 😴🛌💤… so naturally, I’ve been wide awake since precisely 3.21am!!! 👀⏰🤦‍♀️🙄

Having accepted that sleep clearly wasn’t going to happen, I decided to make the most of the ridiculous hour and catch up on some admin instead! 📝📲😂

That stage when your once-lovely puppy suddenly appears to have lost their listening ears and new behaviours begin appearing almost overnight…

My four-week Adolescent Course has been created specifically for teenage dogs aged approximately 6–15 months — and the humans trying to guide them through it!

I’ll help you understand what is happening to your dog emotionally and behaviourally, while giving you clear, practical guidance to rebuild focus, improve self-control and encourage better decision-making around real-life distractions.

Particular attention will be given to:

🐾 Does your dog think every dog they see is there to play?

One of the things I hear all the time is…

“As soon as my dog sees another dog, that’s it! They’re pulling, barking, whining and desperate to get over to say hello.”

The instinct is often to think…

“They just need more opportunities to play with other dogs and then they will calm down.”

Actually… often they need the complete opposite.

They need to spend time around dogs who don’t want to play.

Now before anyone panics… I’m not saying dogs shouldn’t play. Play is brilliant. It develops confidence, social skills and, let’s face it, it’s great fun to watch!

But if every dog your puppy meets becomes a playmate, they quickly start believing that every dog they see exists for their entertainment.

Then one day they’re on a lead, they spot another dog and…

“Yay!! My new best friend!”

Except they can’t get there.

Frustration builds.

The lead goes tight.

The barking starts.

The lunging starts.

And owners understandably begin worrying that their dog has become “reactive”.

In many cases, they’re not reacting through aggression…

They’re reacting through frustration and excitement.

Dogs learn an incredible amount from other dogs.

A calm, confident adult dog teaches lessons that we simply can’t.

They show youngsters that it’s perfectly normal to walk past another dog…

…to have a quick sniff…

…or even completely ignore them.

No drama.

No wrestling.

No zoomies.

No “YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND!” 😂

Just quiet confidence.

One of the biggest misconceptions about socialisation is that dogs need to meet and play with every dog they see.

They don’t.

In fact, one of the greatest gifts you can give your puppy is teaching them that other dogs are simply part of the environment.

Sometimes they’ll play.

Most of the time… they’ll simply walk past.

And that’s exactly how life is.

A truly well-socialised dog isn’t one that wants to greet every dog.

It’s a dog that can notice another dog… make good decisions… and happily carry on their walk with you.

Sometimes the best teachers aren’t the most exciting dogs…

They’re the calm ones who quietly show youngsters that not every encounter needs to end in a game of chase.

🐶 A dog’s nose is nothing short of incredible… 🤯

We all know dogs love to sniff… but did you know just how extraordinary their noses really are?

👃 Dogs experience the world through smell first. While we rely mainly on our eyesight, your dog’s nose is constantly building an incredibly detailed picture of the world around them.

🐾 A dog’s nose can detect where a scent has been… and often which direction it’s travelled. By comparing the tiniest differences in scent strength between each nostril, they can work out where to go next.

💨 Dogs don’t sniff like we breathe. When they sniff, special airflow inside the nose directs scent molecules to millions of scent receptors, while air is expelled through slits at the sides of the nostrils so they don’t “blow away” the very scent they’re trying to investigate.

🧠 A dog’s brain is built for smell. The area responsible for analysing scent is proportionally around 40 times larger than ours!

👃 Your dog’s nose is usually wet for a reason. That moisture helps trap scent particles, making it even easier to detect and identify different smells.

🐕 Every dog’s nose print is unique – just like our fingerprints!

It’s no wonder that sniffing isn’t “just having a sniff”… it’s how dogs gather information, solve problems, make decisions and understand the world around them.

So next time your dog stops every few metres on a walk to investigate a smell… remember, they’re probably reading the equivalent of today’s news! 📰🐾
