🐾☀️ HEATSTROKE IN DOGS — PLEASE READ ☀️🐾
With temperatures getting higher, I wanted to share some important information about heatstroke in dogs and how quickly it can become serious.
Dogs cannot cool themselves down the same way humans do. They mainly rely on panting, and during hot or humid weather this often isn’t enough. Heatstroke can happen far quicker than people realise — even from short walks, playing, travelling in cars, lying in the sun or overexcitement.
🚨 Heatstroke is a medical emergency and can sadly become fatal if not treated quickly.
⚠️ Signs of heatstroke can include:
• Excessive panting
• Thick drool or foaming saliva
• Bright red or pale gums
• Rapid heartbeat
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness or wobbling
• Confusion or distress
• Collapse or seizures in severe cases
🐶 Dogs most at risk:
• Flat faced breeds
• Thick coated dogs
• Puppies and older dogs
• Overweight dogs
• Dogs with breathing or heart conditions
🚑 If you suspect heatstroke:
✅ Move your dog somewhere cool immediately
✅ Start cooling them straight away using cool or cold water
Focus on:
• Belly
• Chest
• Groin area
• Paw pads
✅ Use fans or airflow if possible to help bring body temperature down
✅ Offer small amounts of cool water to drink
❌ Do not wrap them tightly in wet towels as this can trap heat in
❌ Never wait to “see if they improve” before contacting a vet
📞 Contact your vet immediately, even if your dog seems to recover after cooling. Heatstroke can still cause serious internal damage and complications afterwards.
☀️ Ways to help prevent heatstroke:
• Walk early morning or later evening only
• Avoid hot pavements
• Keep fresh water available at all times
• Use cooling mats or paddling pools
• Keep dogs in shaded, ventilated areas
• Never leave dogs in cars — even for a few minutes
Because of the temperatures today, I’ve made the decision to close the salon as I don’t feel it’s safe for dogs to be groomed in this heat. Their safety and wellbeing will always come first 💗
