Spend a few minutes doing something easy and fun together. Reward a check-in, practise some luring, get that connection going BEFORE heading off.

If they’re too overwhelmed to engage, make the starting point easier.

And take the bloody food with you 😂 You want more of the good stuff? Reward it.

Olive didn’t need to become a different dog. She needed to learn how to cope with the world around her. 🥹🌶️

When we started, walks were HARD. Seeing another dog or anything that moved (especially wheels) could mean barking, lunging, fixating and completely losing connection with her owner.

Fast forward to now… 👀

She can see dogs.
She can make better choices.
And most importantly, her owner actually has the skills to help her through those moments.

This is what I mean when I say I’m not looking for “perfect” dogs.

I want dogs who can experience triggers without completely falling apart… and owners who know exactly what to do when things get difficult.

Olive has absolutely smashed it. 🥹👏🏼

Olive’s owners had got to the point where they thought this was just who she was. 🌶️

A Pomeranian who reacted to pretty much EVERYTHING.

Dogs. People. The environment around her.

And when you’ve been living with reactivity for long enough, it’s very easy to start believing that walks will always feel like this.

Today wasn’t about magically “fixing” Olive in one session.

It was about showing her owners that she CAN make different choices. She CAN learn to regulate around the things she finds difficult. And they CAN learn how to help her.

There’s still work to do.

But they left today with something they didn’t have when they arrived:

Hope.

And honestly, that first glimpse of “oh sh*t… maybe we actually CAN change this” is one of my favourite parts of my job 🥹🌶️

Olive is working with me through my Hybrid Program - combining online support with in-person training here in Sutton Coldfield.

If you’ve got a dachshund that is still barking and lunging at other dogs (even though you’ve done everything google told you to do) this is for you!!

1) consider changing the tool… is the harness best for your dog? Or is it part of the pattern?

2) what’s the actual reason they’re reacting? Do you know?

And finally…

3) have they had enough experience in different contexts to understand what is expected?
