This is Poe! He’s just turned 1, and he barks and lunges at every human and every dog he sees.

His humans have tried really hard, but getting a daxie wasn’t what they expected. And for a lot of my clients it isn’t.
This breed is tenacious, forward, independent and everything that you don’t expect in a small dog.

Anyway, how do we go from this, to a calmer, balanced little dog?

For Poe, it includes:
- socialising around balanced dogs
- increase exercise but keep exercise structured
- give an outlet for high arousal activity
- teach lead pressure and lead manners
- using food to motivate and create new behaviours
- keeping a diary so we can see the progress in real life
- daily support so they know what to change and improve
- introducing corrections

This is exactly what the 3 month program is designed for!

You know what’s exhausting?

Spending months building a small dog’s confidence…

Only for two uncontrolled dogs to come charging over because someone believes “they didn’t know we were round the corner”

I was on a training session with the little dog to build his confidence and his owners confidence around other dogs.
This could have had devastating consequences
He is ok, luckily. The next dog may not be so lucky.

1) I told her to stop getting everything prepped for when a dog came. Shortening the lead, getting the food out, saying ‘watch’… it was all signs to him that something is coming

2) I said ‘start acting like a normal person’ t**s out, shoulders back and just walk past!

3) I reminded her to have fun again, because training can feel draining and overwhelming

We’ve been working together a few weeks, and meeting the little guy in person was incredible! Progress had already been made, and he was a different dog to when we began

BUT

Sometimes we need to strip it back and ensure we’re not the trigger for the reaction.

Super proud of these guys, they’re smashing it!

It’s rare I get the ‘easy’ dogs come to me 🙈 most of the time, the behaviours are intense and extreme.

The owners have lost trust. They’ve lost hope. They don’t know what to do.

I had a session last night on zoom with Benji’s owners. They’re committed and ready to change 💪🏻

They’re coming to see me in 2 weeks time and that’s when I will assess the underlying emotions of this dog, and help his owners enjoy walks again.
