Today we’re sadly making an appeal for Baby, a sweet elderly cat who needs a palliative foster home. Baby was adopted from us three years ago, but recently returned in very poor condition. Following her health check earlier this week, she’s been to the vets today for further investigations, and they have identified a mass in her mouth which they believe is a squamous cell carcinoma.
Baby deserves to spend her last days in a cosy home. She’s bright and lively, and eats well (though messily, due to the location of the mass). She enjoys human company and will cry loudly for attention. She’s had blood tests to confirm she doesn’t have other underlying problems, including checking her kidneys and thyroid, which are normal.
While she still has quality of life, and can be kept comfortable, we want to give her that chance. However we don’t know how long this state will last, and it’s important she is allowed to go peacefully once she’s ready, and not forced to stay if she is suffering. Palliative fostering will inevitably involve sadness, and it’s not something everyone is able to do, but it's rewarding to know that you made sure an animal’s last days were filled with love and care.
Baby will need a pet-free and child-free foster home, or a space where she can be kept completely separate from any who live in the house. She is a delicate girl, she doesn’t like being around other cats, and finds children distressing. She needs someone who has time to sit with her, help clean her up after feeds, and let her know she’s not been abandoned in her time of need.
Baby’s veterinary care will be handled by the rescue with Merseyvets. Her foster home will not be expected to pay her vet bills, or make decisions regarding her treatment, but will be consulted about her ongoing condition.
If a suitable foster cannot be found for Baby, then she will be going to live with the cattery manager, but this means we’ll have less fostering space for other needy cats over the winter.
If you’re prepared to offer Baby a special place in your heart, please fill our form in: https://carlalaneanimalsinneed.co.uk/adoption-questionnaire/ (note that no adoption fees are associated with her, but fosterers are subject to a home check, and in Baby’s case especially must keep in regular contact with the rescue; please bear in mind we're based in Liverpool)
If you aren’t in a position to foster, but would like to help Baby, then please consider donating towards her vet bills (https://carlalaneanimalsinneed.co.uk/donate/) or buying some special food for her, which is nutritious and easy to eat (https://www.animed.co.uk/royal-canin-recovery-ultra-soft-mousse-for-dogs-and-cats-12x195g).
