☀️🐶 **Heatstroke in Dogs: Is a Life-Threatening Emergency** 🐶☀️
🚨 **Signs of heatstroke include:**
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Bright red gums
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Collapse or seizures
Certain dogs are at higher risk, including flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs), overweight dogs, elderly pets, and those with underlying health conditions.
💡 **Tips to keep your dog safe:**
✅ Walk during the cooler parts of the day
✅ Ensure constant access to fresh water
✅ Provide shade when outdoors
✅ Avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather
✅ Never leave your dog in a parked car – even for a few minutes
🆘 **What to do if you think your dog has heatstroke:**
• Move them immediately to a cool, shaded area.
• Pour cool (not ice-cold) water over their body, focusing on the tummy, paws, and inner thighs (if using a garden hose ensure cold water running first before hosing down your dog)
• Place them in front of a fan if available.
• Offer small amounts of cool water to drink.
• Contact your vet straight away and continue cooling your dog while travelling to the practice. Get the air con on in the car while you're cooling so ready to travel.
❌ Do not use wet towels as this can trap heat in and potentially worsen the situation.
Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Fast action can save your dog's life.
Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine 🌞🐾
