Day One in Hungary - I’m out here until Friday treating horses. Exhausting day as I had to leave home at 4am as being super-cautious and stressing about traffic and security delays (always fun when flying with physio equipment) I left plenty of time to make my 7am flight…

All the weeks of anxiety over the fact my K-Laser case was 2cm too big, and would they kick off at the array of electrical devices I had in my carry-on was completely unfounded; they didn’t even search my bag (first time EVER this has happened).

I always set off the alarms with my bionic leg, but that is a routine occurrence now.

I landed around 11am local time, checked into the hotel and changed, then headed out to get the first two horses of the trip seen this afternoon.

Finished the day with a quick trip to the supermarket to grab some healthy snacks (I am already missing the gym!!) then back to the hotel for an early night - busy day tomorrow!

Electrotherapy is Cheating

Is it cheating to get a better outcome using everything you possibly can when the animal is the one who benefits?

Sometimes electrophysical modalities stimulate tissues to heal faster, stronger or more completely. Sometimes they enable pain modulation, whether that be in joints, wounds or tissues. Sometimes they just achieve things your hands alone cannot. Why wouldn’t you want this for your animal?

Sound clinical reasoning should always be applied. No one reaches for an electro to make their own lives easier; these items are expensive! We don’t invest in them for bragging rights!

Balance is key, and they definitely should not replace the manual therapy that therapist’s can offer - they just help with some of the tricky bits.

This one is often a little controversial…

But, if you cannot do these basic mobilisations with your own hands, you definitely should not be doing them at all.

Let me explain…

Either your technique and/or ex*****on is poor, in which case you need to adjust and relearn before you apply to a horse. Or there is something more serious going on with the horse, and they require further investigation.

No professional should EVER be using hoof picks, fascial tools, pens or any other stimulus to force a horse into these mobilisations. They could potentially be causing damage to deeper structures.
