We need to have an honest conversation with you, because we think you deserve honesty rather than us just quietly burning out. 💔
Behind this page and our rescue is a tiny team. Just a handful of trustees, a handful of volunteers on the ground, and a handful of fosterers — and in reality, the lion’s share of everything you see (every message, every comment, every rehoming post, every enquiry, every aspect of running this rescue) is carried by just a few people. We are a separate charity to the National RSPCA society and have to raise our own funds just like any other small rescue.
We all started helping because we love animals and because at some point, each of us stepped outside our comfort zone to help an animal that needed us. 🐾 That’s who we are, and that’s who we need so many of you now to be too. As rescues just can’t tackle the size of the cat crisis problem on our own anymore.
Right now, we are exhausted. We are dealing with:
❌ Unneutered cats breeding out of control.
❌Pregnant cats and kittens - EVERYWHERE!
❌ Kittens having kittens.
❌ Adult females so small, they’ve never been able to fully develop due to back to back pregnancies.
❌ Kittens born with defects.
❌ Inbreeding.
❌ Out of control colonies, getting larger by the day.
❌Cats abandoned when owners move house.
❌Elderly cats left behind when owners pass away, with no plan made for them.
❌ Relinquishing enquiries.
❌Injured cats found with no support.
❌ Battered immunocompromised boys who have struggled for years, invisible to most.
❌ We hear of countless cruelty, neglect, abandonment and breeding situations. None of which we have the infrastructure to support. Yet the stories sit with us.
❌ Lost cats.
❌ Found cats.
❌ RTA’s.
And more and more, we’re also being contacted by owners asking us to cover vet bills for their own pets, or by people outside our area hoping we can somehow stretch to cover them too. Or simply you are moving and can’t take your cat with you.
We want to help everyone, of course we do. The reality. We simply cannot. 🥺
So here is what we’re asking of you:
✅ If you own a cat, please plan for its whole life — neutering, microchipping, vaccinating, and a way to cover routine and unexpected vet bills, whether that’s insurance or savings. It’s about being ready before the difficult moment comes.
💴 It’s a luxury as a cat owner that you have the option to insure your animals for often a small monthly amount. As a rescue we do not have that luxury so every cat who comes into our care needing treatment we have to raise the funds for. For some very sick animals this is thousands of pounds, we simply cannot raise enough money to also be supporting owned animals. And we definitely do not have enough spaces to be taking any into care. There really is no room at the inn. 🚪
🏥 A kind word to the vets and vet practices in our local area. We know emergency treatment, scans and operations carry genuinely high costs, and we’re not asking anyone to work for nothing. But the basic cost of starting an animal’s life correctly — vaccinating, neutering, and microchipping (which, as a reminder, is now a legal requirement) — is often what pushes people into not doing it at all. Every practice that can offer a low-cost scheme, or significantly reduced neutering prices, isn’t just helping individual owners — you’re helping stop the crisis at its source, before it ever reaches a rescue’s door.
🚨WE NEED YOUR HELP IN OUR LOCAL AREA. - If you’re a vet or work within one locally and can help us find a way forward on this, we would love to hear from you. Also if you can help with overnight holding - pre and post op neutering we could also assist with more TNR’s to help. We simply do not have spare foster spaces to be able to do this. Yet many vet pens sit empty on a daily/nightly basis. Could you allocate one to a rescue? 🙏
If you see an animal that needs help, please don’t assume that ringing a rescue means your job is done. We can offer advice and support, but we don’t have the hands or the hours to personally take on every case that’s reported to us. It’s difficult sometimes just to keep up with the replies. 😩 As volunteers we work, have young families, care and family commitments as well as all other life stresses. We do our best but we are absolutely drowning. 🛟
Sometimes the most helpful thing is what you do yourself — stepping in, making a call, fostering, or helping that one cat in front of you, rather than passing it on and stepping back. Quite honestly, right now we need you to help, every rescue needs you to help.
We appreciate for many it will mean pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, maybe putting yourself out a little bit, or creating a safe space in your home for a while -it’s exactly what our volunteers do day in day out - but our resources are now stretched to the limit and every situation in the area cannot fall on a very small number of rescue volunteers. The demand far outweighs the supply.
📍 If it’s a situation outside our area, please don’t tell us about it. It sounds harsh to say, but we are at breaking point with our own area, every case we take on beyond our own patch is one more thing pulling us away from the animals right here who have nowhere else to turn, and adding to our mental overload. We cover (DY5-9) only. 🗺️
When we know about a cat needing help, it’s impossible not to worry about it, and we just can’t cope with more worry right now - it’s breaking us. People seem to think that as rescue volunteers we are able to just keep absorbing and absorbing the problems - we mentally and physically cannot. 😭
We’re not saying any of this to sound unkind. We’re saying it because we are genuinely stretched to breaking point, and because the only way this works is if more of us — not just a handful of us — are willing to step up, both public and professional.
