❤️ Prevention Is Better Than The Cure ❤️

I couldn't be prouder of this wonderful client and their beautiful puppy ❤️

Who arrived home this week!

From the very beginning, they have stacked the odds of success firmly in their favour.

✅ Chose a fantastic, ethical breeder
✅ Invested in professional support early (excellent choice there if I do say so myself! 😉)
✅ Listened to advice with an open mind
✅ Made thoughtful adaptations at home
✅ Put management strategies in place before problems had a chance to develop

One of the oldest sayings around is still one of the wisest:

❤️ Prevention is better than cure ❤️

This is especially true when children and puppies are involved.

When we proactively prevent unwanted behaviours from being rehearsed, we help puppies develop great habits from day one.

Every successful interaction becomes part of their learning history, making future behaviour much more predictable and desirable.

It's far easier, kinder and less stressful to prevent a problem from occurring than it is to repair damage, rebuild trust or undo months of behaviour rehearsal later on.

Even if that keeps dog trainers in jobs! 😉 the good ones also want to avoid problems!

Too often people wait until there is a problem before seeking help. By then, the puppy has had plenty of opportunities to practise behaviours we'd rather they hadn't!

This family have taken the opposite approach. They've planned ahead, asked questions, put the work in and given their puppy the very best start.

That doesn't guarantee perfection (puppies will always keep us on our toes! 😂), but it does massively increase the chances of raising a confident, well-adjusted family companion.

The children will also be happy their books 📚 are still intact 😉

A huge well done to this lovely family. Your puppy is lucky to have you. ❤️🐾

🐾 Pre-puppy planning… one of my favourite visits! 🐾

Yesterday I visited a fantastic proactive family before their puppy even comes home 👏

We covered all the things that can feel overwhelming once those tiny paws arrive…

🐶 Toilet training
🦷 Teething (and surviving it 😅)
🕰️ Routine and realistic expectations
🏡 Crate location and set up
🍽️ Food choices
🎀 Harness options
✂️ Grooming preparation
👧 Children and puppy interactions
🚧 Puppy pens, pads… and everything in between!

The lovely thing about these visits is there’s no pressure, no sleep deprivation and no “we wish we’d asked this before…” moments.

Just time to chat, plan, ask questions and set everyone up for success ❤️

They left feeling reassured, prepared and saying it was money well spent before the big arrival home 🥹🐾

I was super shocked how much they had already done (they have done their research!)

Preparation doesn’t guarantee perfection… but it can make those first few weeks feel a whole lot less overwhelming.

Now the important question… 👀

The adolescent puppy effect… 🐾😂

Their humans can feel like they spend most of their day negotiating the pups life choices…

“Please don’t eat that.”
“Please come back.”
“Please remember your name.”
“Please stop making questionable decisions.”

Then suddenly…silence.

You turn around and find this ❤️🐾

Fast asleep.
Looking impossibly sweet.
Not a single sign of the chaos, selective hearing, zoomies, over enthusiasm or dramatic life choices from earlier.

And somehow…as if by magic…you forget absolutely everything they’ve done and remember only how much you adore them 💤❤️🐾

Adolescent dogs are hard work.

Behaviour change takes time.

It can feel messy.
There will be wins.
There will be hard days.
Sometimes an amazing day is followed by a difficult one…and sometimes a difficult day comes just before something clicks.

That is all normal.

Building those foundations brick by brick.

This isn’t about reaching a finish line quickly.

It’s about creating change that lasts.

There are days where it all feels impossible… and then there are days where you suddenly catch a glimmer 😉

What your dog needs most is not perfection.

They need a human who keeps showing up ❤️

A handler who adjusts, learns, breathes, and doesn’t give up when things feel hard.

The difficult bits are often where the growth lives.

So if today feels tough…please keep going.
