📢⚠️Public safety announcement!
Adders live in areas you may walk your dog. ⚠️⚠️
With the warmer weather, they are more active.

Adders 🐍are the only venomous snakes in the UK, generally they are shy and prefer to hide away from people and animals. They can be found in sand dunes, grassy areas, rocky areas, and woodland edges.

✨If your dog has been bitten by an adder 🐍you may see two clear puncture wounds.
They are not always present so if you suspect an adder bite continue as below anyway!

✨If you ever think your dog has been bitten by an adder, DON'T panic, DON'T touch the area and DON'T apply a tourniquet
✨DO, keep them as still as possible, DO carry them back to the car(if small enough to do so) – this will help prevent the venom from spreading throughout their body. DO take the shortest route back home/to the car and call your vet as soon as possible!

☀️ HOT PAVEMENT WARNING ☀️

With the temperature today pavements can be hot and will usually feel a lot hotter than the air outside. Pavements can become hot enough to cause pain, discomfort or even burn your dogs paws.

The best way to check if the temperature of a pavement is too hot for your dog is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws 💚🐶

☀️ Heat stroke in dogs is serious — and it can happen faster than people realise.

With warmer weather forecast, please take extra care when deciding whether to walk your dog. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially puppies, senior dogs, overweight dogs, large breeds, and flat-faced breeds.

As a rough guide, once temperatures start rising above 20°C, it’s worth being extra cautious. At 24°C and above, many dogs can start to struggle, and at 28°C+, walks can become dangerous for a lot of dogs.

Signs of heat stroke can include:

🐾 Excessive panting
🐾 Drooling
🐾 Bright red gums
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🐾 Weakness or wobbling
🐾 Confusion or collapse

If you’re worried your dog may be overheating, move them somewhere cool, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet urgently.

A missed walk is always better than a medical emergency. Try early morning or late evening walks, shaded garden time, sniff games, frozen treats, or a LickiMat instead. 🐶🤎

Stay safe, stay cool, and keep those paws protected.
