DOG GYM RED FLAGS 🚩 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Things every dog owner should look out for when choosing a dog gym or training facility.

🚩FORCING DOGS ON or TO MOVE🚩
They force dogs who clearly aren’t ready. The dog may put up a bit of a fight or resistance but they ignore how the dog feels and put them on anyway creating not a calm dog but a shut down one.

🚩LITTLE TO NO DESENSITISATION🚩
Crucial is an understatement. Every dog NEEDS to be trained to use the equipment. If they aren’t the effects could be detrimental and potentially lifelong. Dogs go into fight flight if they get scared and if it’s flight they can seriously get injured which is NOT a quick fix. No dog should be chucked on a piece of equipment they aren’t taught to use it first and it could take some time depending on the dog.

🚩PUSHING DOGS OVER THRESHOLD🚩
We monitor each dog, we also make sure they don’t over exert themselves because their welfare, safety and health is our priority. They don’t have dog first aid training or they don’t know the signs of pain or stress. That’s why we work with a canine physiotherapist and continue to educate ourselves with known and reputable organisations such as the IMDT.

🚩CLAIMING FALSE INFORMATION🚩
There are words they use which sound incredible but don’t have any qualifications to back it up.

🚩ONE SIZE FITS ALL🚩
Every dog is different: Age, breed, weight, fitness, medical history, mobility, temperament and previous injuries should all influence an exercise programme. If every dog is given exactly the same routine, ask why.

🚩CALLING SHUTDOWN ‘calm’
A dog becoming quiet doesn’t automatically mean they’re relaxed. A dog can stop resisting because they’ve learned that their behaviour doesn’t change what happens to them.
Suppression isn’t the same as confidence.

🚩UNREALISTIC PROMISES🚩
Your dog isn’t broken but a dog gym session alone won’t change your dogs’ big feelings. Be cautious of anyone promising dramatic transformations or claiming their programme can “fix” every dog. The best professionals should be able to explain what they’re doing, why they’re doing it.
