“He bit out of nowhere.”

But did he?

Before a bite, there may have been a conversation happening that was simply too quiet for us to hear.

A yawn.
A blink.
A lip lick.
A head turn.
Looking away.
Trying to move away.

As discomfort increases, those whispers may become louder.

A freeze.
A stiff body.
A hard stare.
Showing teeth.

And then…the growl.

💚 Please don't punish the growl.

A growl isn't a dog being “naughty”. It's communication.

“I'm uncomfortable.”
“I need space.”
“Please stop.”

Punishing the growl doesn't change how the dog feels - it can simply teach them that their warning isn't safe or effective.

silencing the warnings just leaves the bite.

Dogs don't always follow a neat sequence, and every dog is different. That's why learning to recognise the subtle signals matters.

Over my next few posts, I'm going to share some of the whispers we often miss.

Entries for bake off cost £3, or 2 for £5 and must brought in to The Ark by 7pm - Friday 21st August with a full list of ingredients. 📋️

😍 Such a sweet girl 😍

Bluebell is a friendly girl who loves going for walks on and off lead. 🥰

She is a gentle and quiet soul with a lot of love to give to a family. ❤️

Like most sighthounds Bluebell does have a bit of a prey drive and is likely to chase a cat or wildlife if given the opportunity! 🐶

This beautiful girl could live with children of secondary school age who have been around quiet dogs before. She cannot live with any dogs, small animals or cats. 🧒
