Your dog has probably learnt what a cue means and may respond reliably to your cues at home, but not when out and about.
To achieve this you need to practise a skill in different locations, and in real-life situations, until your dog can perform it anywhere - and even with distractions.
Start with small, steps gradually increasing distance, duration and distraction. In dog training terms 'generalising' means performing the same behaviour in new places and 'proofing' is doing the same behaviour with increasing difficulty.
This video is a good example of behaviours being generalised and proofed, combining waiting for a cue, recall and emergency stop.
Great work from Elaine with Soxx and Brenda with Ted!
