Slough CATS&kittens Rescue We are a small cat rescue foster based group based in Slough. We do: trappings, rehab, TNR, emergency response, fostering and rehoming.

All the cats in our care are: neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, parasite treated and FIV/Felv tested as a minimum.

WHEN WILL THE GOVERNMENT FINALLY ACCEPT THAT MANDATORY NEUTERING IS THE ONLY WAY FORWARD?

WAKE UP, UNITED KINGDOM!

We are already seeing injured, sick, starving cats and kittens around every corner. Kittens abandoned in bags, carriers, parks and lay-bys are becoming disturbingly common.

Leave things as they are, and kittens eating the bodies of dead kittens could become another horrifying reality. I've witnessed this myself in a developing country. I never thought I'd fear seeing the same thing here.

For years, the government has shown little interest in mandatory neutering. We have repeatedly been told that national charities have the situation under control.

WELL, LOOK AROUND. DOES ANY OF THIS LOOK UNDER CONTROL?

The situation is getting worse, yet those with the power to make meaningful changes continue to ignore the warnings and desperate cries for help from people dealing with this crisis every single day.

If the RSPCA and Cats Protection are struggling, imagine what it's like for tiny, independent rescues like ours, operating without substantial funding.

The RSPCA regularly gives our telephone number to people contacting their helpline, as though we somehow have more resources than they do.

We don't.

Right now, we actually have space. We have foster homes available. But we are refusing to take in more cats because we simply cannot afford their veterinary treatment.

None of us is a millionaire. We have families to feed, bills to pay, and we already put more of our own money into rescue work than we can reasonably afford. Donations are at an all-time low.

WE ARE SUFFOCATING.

And this crisis is creating another problem.

Cowboy rescues are popping up like burger shops.

Some take in cute kittens, post lovely photographs, collect praise and donations, but fail to address the actual problem. Neutering is overlooked, colonies are left unmanaged, and the cycle continues.

Sometimes their incompetence creates problems that take years to undo.

Just a few days ago, we were called to a colony of 10 cats.

We were told that approximately a year earlier, another rescue operating nearby had taken a mother and her newborn kittens from that location, leaving behind four older kittens.

According to the people who contacted us, they had begged that rescue to at least neuter the remaining cats if they couldn't take them in.

Nothing was done.

ONE YEAR LATER, FOUR CATS HAVE BECOME TEN.

Around half are female and could become pregnant at any moment. If nobody intervenes, we could potentially be dealing with dozens more kittens within months.

And it gets worse.

We were also told that the mother cat escaped during transport, in an unfamiliar area, and never returned to her original colony.

We don't know what happened to her, but surely she was still producing litters.

What we do know is that this was an entirely preventable situation.

Yet the public often sees nothing beyond adorable kitten photographs, without asking what happened to the mother, what happened to the cats left behind, or whether anything was done to stop the cycle.

RESCUE IS NOT JUST ABOUT COLLECTING KITTENS. IT IS ABOUT PREVENTING THE NEXT LITTER FROM BEING BORN INTO SUFFERING.

And this is exactly why mandatory neutering matters.

We cannot keep trying to empty an overflowing bathtub while leaving the taps running.

Neutering should not depend entirely on whether an owner feels like doing it, whether a rescue has enough donations, or whether somebody happens to notice a colony before another breeding season.

We need proper legislation, affordable access to neutering, meaningful enforcement and accountability.

And we need national charities to stand together and demand it.

Sadly, we have little faith that another petition started by members of the public will achieve much on its own.

WE BELIEVE THE RSPCA AND CATS PROTECTION SHOULD BE LEADING A UNITED NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR MANDATORY NEUTERING OF OWNED CATS AND GOVERNMENT FUNDED TNR PROGRAMME FOR UNOWNED CATS.

They have the reach, recognition and influence that small rescues simply do not.

So perhaps it's time to turn the tables.

SHALL WE START A PETITION CALLING ON THE RSPCA AND CATS PROTECTION TO JOINTLY CAMPAIGN FOR MANDATORY NEUTERING IN THE UK? 🤔

Because something has to change.

We cannot keep rescuing our way out of a crisis that nobody is willing to prevent.

We are exhausted. We are angry. And we are running out of options.

We've got some good news❤️

Arthur went to his forever home few days ago and is doing really well! We expected him to hide under the bed for weeks, but he was out and about the next morning😻

We haven't done our adoption announcement posters for a whole year, we were so busy, but it's time to get back to them, we and you all loved them!

Happy adoption Arthur! We wish you and your new parents a fab life full of love, paper balls and soft blankets!❤️

Alpha St colony

On Wednesday very early morning we trapped 3 cats of the colony we told you about, as we have been offered an amazing place for them. They will have their own woods and a massive territory to roam once they are settled. They are recovering after neutering now and are doing well. The third one, a girl is recovering separately now as she needs medication and will join them shortly. We are very happy we found this place for them, but there are others still out there.

😭Our fundraising is not doing the best. We still haven't raised funds for the kittens and mums, let alone those colony.

‼️Please if you can donate just a few pounds we can hopefully get the rest of the street too. If you can't donate, please share🙏

It's so cold out there at nights, we dread to think how many others are starving and freezing right now, but without funds we cannot do anything😢😢😢

Those two cats are stuck with us with registered microchips situation. We are posting this in attempt to find owners, although we were told in both cases that people left them behind when they moved. If we find owners earlier, we will be able to sort them out faster and it will free space and funds for other cats.

One was found on Torridge Rd SL3, the other on Alexandra Rd Chalvey. If you happen to know the owners of any of them, please email [email protected]

FREE KITTEN WANTED

We are very tired of those posts we have to decline on our community group.

'I want a kitten, does anyone have any free going round'?

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE KITTEN.

If you can't afford paying for a kitten, how can you commit to their vet expenses for another 20+ years?

Free kitten not from a rescue will not be neutered, vaccinated, microchiped or parasite treated.

As a responsible owner you need to do this asap. This will cost you £300.

Responsible owner will also insure the cat as well as spend a good amount on daily expenses as food & litter.

Responsible owner will also take them to vets for their vaccinations and parasite treatment and of course if anything untoward happens.

And a lot of responsible owners will take two kittens, as they understand how important that is for their wellbeing and development.

But if you want to get a free kitten, never take him to vets, chuck them outside to eat scraps/prey and s**t outside - DO NOT GET A CAT!!!!!!!

By the way - we have kittens ready to go for adoption, with another few almost ready including Moo Moo on the pic below. If you are looking to add kittens to your family and are a responsible owner - email us on [email protected] 🙏

🐱 Do cats make us happier?

A recent study compared cat numbers and wellbeing across 93 countries. It found that countries with more cats tended to report greater happiness.

The study can’t prove that cats cause happiness—but anyone who’s shared their home with a purring little companion might have their own theory! 😻

What does your cat do that always makes your day better? Tell us in the comments ❤️

Our long term resident 16 year old Mr Prinnie on the picture below😻 (he is not available for adoption, he will stay with us until times come)

𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 😻🏡

This little mum and her 5 babies were trying to survive outside. The kittens arrived with us semi-feral, frightened of people and with very poorly tummies. 💔

Sadly, one of the babies didn't survive the severe diarrhoea they were suffering from.

The family had been fed mainly rice for a long time, and together with feline coronavirus, their digestive systems were in an awful state. Mum was losing her appetite, developing a huge "rice belly" and had been struggling with constipation alternating with runny diarrhoea for a long time.

After 5 weeks in rescue, we're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel ❤️

Mum is now back to normal, although her tummy may occasionally still play up while her digestive system fully recovers. The babies are still having episodes of diarrhoea followed by normal stools and are currently on another 5-day course of worming treatment — but things finally seem to be heading in the right direction.

Feline coronavirus is extremely common in cats and often causes few or no symptoms. For these kittens, however, their digestive systems had already been through so much that recovery has taken much longer.

And finally… they've started putting on weight! 🥹 After everything they've been through, it really feels like they've turned a corner.

Now we can start looking for 3 wonderful homes:

🐈‍⬛ Susu & Calcifer — together
🐈‍⬛ Jiji & Haku — together
🐈 Fifi — their beautiful young mum

You would never believe the kittens arrived semi-feral. They are now incredibly friendly, affectionate, playful and ridiculously cute. ❤️

The kittens are approximately 13 weeks old, while Fifi herself is still under a year old. Poor girl has got a hunger syndrome and is still trying to nick any human food she can find, that's what happens when they are starving outside😢

💗 Fifi is fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered.

💗 The kittens had their first vaccinations yesterday and should be ready to leave in approximately 3 weeks, following their second vaccination and neutering. They may be able to leave a little earlier if their new families are happy to bring them back to Cippenham for their second vaccination.

From frightened, poorly little kittens surviving outside on rice… to this. 🥹

Now all they need is the final part of their story — their forever homes. ❤️
