Puppy classes aren't necessarily the best starting point for every puppy β€” or every family. 🐢

I've been doing more of my At-Home Puppy Foundations sessions recently, so I thought it was worth explaining what they are and who they can be particularly useful for.

Rather than coming to a class, I come to you and we work with your puppy in their own home and environment.

It can be a great option if:

🐾 Your puppy hasn't finished their vaccinations yet and you want to get started
🐾 You'd prefer individual support rather than a group class
🐾 Your puppy finds busy environments overwhelming
🐾 You have children and want everyone involved in learning how to interact and train consistently
🐾 You're struggling with specific puppy problems at home β€” biting, toileting, settling, jumping, stealing things, sleeping etc.
🐾 Or you simply want to get the foundations right from the beginning.

And importantly, it isn't just about teaching sit, down and stay.

We look at your actual puppy β€” their breed, personality, home environment and individual needs β€” and cover the things that will help them develop into a confident, fulfilled dog.

That can include engagement, recall foundations, appropriate play, enrichment, handling, settling, preventing unwanted behaviours from becoming habits and helping you understand why your puppy is doing what they're doing.

I've found these sessions becoming increasingly popular, particularly with owners who want some individual guidance alongside or before joining puppy classes.

I'm based locally and cover Sidcup, New Eltham, Eltham, Bexley, Welling, Chislehurst, Bromley, Orpington and surrounding areas.

If you've recently brought a puppy home and think some one-to-one support might help, feel free to message me. πŸ’™

Pulling isn't always a lead-training problem. 🐾

Sometimes we become so focused on the behaviour we can see that we forget to ask what's driving it.

If a dog leaves the house already highly aroused, frustrated, anxious or desperate to access the environment, repeatedly practising loose-lead exercises may only address one small part of the picture.

That doesn't mean we don't teach loose-lead walking. Of course we do.

But I also want to ask:

🐾 What's their emotional state before the walk even starts?
🐾 Are they getting enough opportunities to sniff and explore?
🐾 Is frustration contributing to the pulling?
🐾 Is the environment currently too difficult?
🐾 Are their individual and breed-influenced needs being met?
🐾 Has pulling simply had a long history of getting them where they want to go?

Sometimes I'll work on those things before making loose-lead walking the priority.

Because there's a big difference between trying to use lead training to control a dog who's struggling...
…and teaching a dog who's in a better emotional state what we'd like them to do.

Train the skill, absolutely. But don't forget to look at the dog underneath the behaviour.

That's Fulfilment First. πŸ’™

Calling your dog over and over isn't improving their recall. It may actually be teaching them not to respond.

β€œBertie, come… Bertie… come… BERTIE! COME!”

If your dog regularly hears their recall cue four or five times before anything happens, they can learn that responding to the first one isn't particularly important.

And if they're already completely absorbed in something else, repeatedly shouting their name from 30 metres away isn't going to make you more relevant. Eventually, your voice can simply become background noise.

Instead:
🐾 Call once.
🐾 If they don't respond, make the situation easier.
🐾 Move closer, create some movement, encourage them towards you or otherwise help them succeed.
🐾 When they do come, mark and reward it.

And while you're building recall, a long line is your friend. It stops your dog disappearing into the distance and allows you to practise successful repetitions without constantly testing a recall that isn't ready yet.

Recall isn't built by shouting louder or calling more often.
It's built through hundreds of successful repetitions where responding to you is worth it.

Make the right response easier, then reinforce it. πŸ’™πŸΎ

🐢 NEW PUPPY CLASSES IN NEW ELTHAM!

Got a new puppy at home? I'm bringing my Puppy Foundations classes to New Eltham, starting next Friday, 4th September.

These are deliberately small classes with a maximum of just 4 puppies, so you and your puppy get plenty of individual help rather than getting lost in a big group.

Over the 5 weeks we'll work on the foundations that really matter:

🐾 Recall

🐾 Loose lead walking

🐾 Calm focus around distractions

🐾 Appropriate puppy social skills

🐾 Confidence building

🐾 Settling and relaxation

🐾 Enrichment & understanding your puppy's needs

🐾 Preventing problems before they become habits

My classes are force-free, reward-based and built around helping you understand your puppy as well as teaching them the skills they'll need as they grow.

September isn’t only back-to-school time for children β€” Puppy Foundations is back too! 🐢

My September courses begin next week, with two different options:

πŸ“ Chislehurst Church Hall
Friday 4 September β€’ 6:30–7:30pm
A calm, indoor class setting.

πŸ“ High Elms Country Park
Saturday 5 September β€’ 9am
A mixture of indoor learning and real-world outdoor practice as the course progresses.

Both classes are limited to just four puppies. That means nobody gets lost in a busy room, and I can give each puppy and owner meaningful individual support.

We cover recall, loose-lead foundations, leave it, focus and other useful everyday skills. We also help puppies learn to feel calm and comfortable around other dogs β€” because good socialisation is about much more than simply letting puppies play together.

Everything is taught through my force-free, Fulfilment First approach: informed by breed and shaped by the individual puppy in front of me.

Spaces are available on both courses. Full details and the direct booking link are in the comments below πŸ‘‡

Sometimes dogs go self-employed. πŸ•πŸ’Ό

What do I mean by that?

Dogs have needs. And some of those needs are strongly influenced by what we've selectively bred them to do for generations.

Hunt.
Chase.
Retrieve.
Dig.
Search.
Track.
Control movement.

If we don't provide appropriate opportunities for those behaviours, the need doesn't necessarily disappear.

Sometimes our dogs simply find their own job.

The Dachshund starts excavating the garden.
The spaniel disappears into the undergrowth.
The retriever constantly carries things around.
The collie starts controlling movement.
The terrier finds something to hunt.

And then we can end up viewing the behaviour they've chosen as the problem.

Of course, breed doesn't explain everything. Every dog is an individual, and behaviours can have many different causes.
But when I'm trying to understand a dog, one of the questions I'm always interested in is:

What does this dog need an appropriate outlet for?
Because rather than spending all our time trying to stop them doing the job they've found for themselves...
sometimes we can give them a better job.

That's a big part of what Fulfilment First means to me.

Got a Dachshund who barks, digs, follows every scent and seems determined to investigate absolutely everything? 🐾

It can be easy to see each of those things as a separate behaviour problem that needs fixing.

But sometimes we need to look at the dog in front of us and ask a different question:

What was this dog actually bred to do?

Dachshunds might be small, but they're very much working dogs. They were bred to use their nose, pursue quarry underground, dig and use their voice to communicate with the person above ground.

So sniffing, digging, hunting and barking aren't necessarily signs that you've got a "naughty" Dachshund.
They're very Dachshund things to do.

Of course, that doesn't mean we simply accept behaviour that's making life difficult. But rather than focusing entirely on stopping it, we can give those natural behaviours appropriate outlets.

Let them sniff.
Give them things to search for.
Create somewhere they're allowed to dig.
Give that busy little nose and brain something meaningful to do.

Because sometimes, when we give dogs better opportunities to do the things they naturally need to do, some of the behaviours we've been struggling with begin to reduce as a result.

Don't just ask, "How do I stop this?"
Ask, "Why is my dog doing this β€” and what might they be missing?"

That's the thinking behind my Fulfilment First approach.
