Regular classes and Scentwork in the Wild… what’s the difference?
Different environments bring different challenges, and taking our scentwork out into new locations is a great way to test the skills our dogs have built.
But those environments aren’t always the best place to learn or refine a skill.
Regular classes give us the chance to work in a familiar environment, where the dog already understands the setup and expectations. That can mean lower stress, fewer competing demands and more clarity around what we’re asking.
It means we can chip away at things week by week.
We can build skills, refine the bits that need more work, make changes as we go and gradually increase the challenge without having to do everything at once.
Then we take those skills out into our Scentwork in the Wild sessions and see what happens when the environment changes.
And importantly, what we see there helps shape what we work on next in class.
Maybe something that looked really solid suddenly falls apart with more distractions. Maybe we spot a gap in understanding. Maybe a dog shows us they’re ready for a bigger challenge.
We take that information back into class, work on it, and then take it back out again.
That’s why I like having both regular classes and Scentwork in the Wild as part of training.
