Living with a reactive dog can be exhausting. Iโ€™ve been there. You are experiencing this.

๐Ÿ’ขYou plan walks around quiet times.
๐Ÿ’ขYou scan the horizon for dogs before ๐Ÿ’ขyour dog sees them.
๐Ÿ’ขYou cross roads.
๐Ÿ’ขYou turn around.
๐Ÿ’ขYou hide behind cars.
๐Ÿ’ขYou know exactly which houses have dogs behind fences.

๐Ÿค”And sometimes you wonder why something as simple as going for a walk has become so complicated.

๐Ÿ’But there is something I really want every reactive-dog guardian to know:

Reactivity is not a moral failing - yours or your dogโ€™s.

A dog barking, lunging, growling, freezing, pulling or exploding at a trigger isnโ€™t necessarily being โ€œaggressiveโ€, โ€œdominantโ€, โ€œstubbornโ€ or โ€œdisobedientโ€.

๐Ÿ˜ณThey may be frightened.
๐Ÿ˜ณFrustrated.
๐Ÿ˜ณOver-aroused.
๐Ÿ˜ณConflicted.
๐Ÿ˜ณIn pain or discomfort.
๐Ÿ˜ณOverwhelmed by the environment.
๐Ÿ˜ณOr simply unable to cope with what is happening at that moment.

โš ๏ธOnce a dog goes over threshold, their ability to think, process information and respond to you can become significantly reduced.

๐Ÿ‘€Thatโ€™s why shouting, correcting, jerking the lead or punishing the reaction doesnโ€™t teach the dog how to feel safer around the trigger.

It may suppress what you can see, but suppression isnโ€™t the same as changing how the dog feels.

๐Ÿ’™ So what CAN you do?

๐Ÿพ ๐‘ช๐’“๐’†๐’‚๐’•๐’† ๐’…๐’Š๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’†.

Distance is one of the most useful tools you have. If your dog can notice the trigger without becoming overwhelmed, you have an opportunity for learning.

Repeatedly taking a dog over threshold isnโ€™t โ€œsocialisationโ€ or โ€œgetting them used to itโ€. It can simply give them more opportunities to rehearse the reaction.

Donโ€™t wait for the barking and lunging. Watch for changes in posture, staring, slowing down, closing the mouth, tension, scanning, inability to disengage or changes in how they respond to you.

Retreat isnโ€™t failure. Sometimes the best thing you can teach a dog is: you donโ€™t have to deal with this โ€” Iโ€™ll help you leave.

Your dog doesnโ€™t need to walk through busy parks, town centres or dog-filled neighbourhoods to have a fulfilling life. A peaceful woodland sniff can offer far more than 30 minutes spent battling triggers.

Being able to walk 3 metres from another dog isnโ€™t necessarily โ€œbetterโ€ than needing 20 metres. Look instead for softer body language, quicker recovery, voluntary disengagement and an increasing ability to make choices.

Stress doesnโ€™t necessarily disappear the moment the trigger does. After a particularly difficult experience, lowering demands and providing opportunities to rest, sniff and decompress can be incredibly valuable.

If behaviour has ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—น๐˜† appeared, intensified or changed, consider veterinary assessment. Behaviour and physical wellbeing are closely connected.

There is no timetable.

๐Ÿ”ปSome dogs improve enormously in weeks.
๐Ÿ”ป๏ฟผSome need months.
๐Ÿ”ปSome need much longer.

And some dogs may always need a degree of thoughtful management.

Thatโ€™s okay.

Success doesnโ€™t have to mean your dog eventually loves other dogs, happily walks through crowds or ignores everything around them.

Sometimes success looks like:

โค๏ธ seeing another dog and choosing to look back at you
โค๏ธ recovering in 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes
โค๏ธ calmly turning around
โค๏ธ choosing to sniff rather than stare
โค๏ธ trusting you when you say โ€œthis wayโ€
โค๏ธ having fewer reactions because youโ€™ve become better at recognising what they need

And perhaps the biggest change happens when we stop asking:

โ€œHow do I stop my dog reacting?โ€

โ€ฆand start asking:

โ€œWhat is my dog struggling with, and how can I help them cope?โ€

Because reactive dogs donโ€™t need tougher handlers.

They need humans who listen. ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ
