Quick session with Ember today. A few lower hides on the menu as you will see. It’s important to change the hides around and challenge the dog if you want it to transfer to the real world.

I was hoping to outsmart her…..I’ll have to try again tomorrow 🐶

Tennis balls to the head is optional 🎾

If dog training doesn’t look like this….I don’t want it

Just a few of our recent success stories from the last few months.

Some of these dogs have been kept on a lead for 7 years, reactive and have been told by previous trainers that they will never have this….

Here’s to bettering the lives of more dogs and owners ❤️

Today we was the first time we introduced Ember to a live search venue 🕵️‍♂️

There were a lot of distractions. Different odours, dogs, people and a completely new environment.

And not a single drop in the quality of her indication or the search itself.

We focus a lot of the indication as you will often see detection/search dogs migrating away from hides, turning to look at the handler or uncertainty.

So what causes this?

Rushing the process, poor reward placement and not introducing distractions in a controlled environment before visiting the real world.

Within our search dogs we want accuracy 🎯 we want to know exactly where the ‘hide’ is.

Yes, it depends on what you are looking for but either way a good indication should be focused, determined and unbroken.

So how can you improve an indication? Try rewarding at the hide and not asking for too much. Asking for a 20+ second indication without building it up first can cause confusion within the dog and a tendency for them to ask for handler for reassurance.

Precision is 🔑

It’s been a wild journey. A dog with mad levels of aggression and a bite history to this…..And I wouldn’t have changed a thing ❤️

But that brings me to the topic of the video. Normalising neutrality and stability should be a priority.

Not bad mannered dogs who ‘love other dogs’ and demonstrate that by bouncing on another dogs head in an attempt to play.

Socialisation is important but it’s not created in the way you may think. It is not created through lots of play with other dogs. When it comes to having a successful future with your dog it is about building a robust dog around other dogs.

If your dog thinks every dog they see is their play mate then that’s when the recall will fail, the leash reactivity will creep in and the walks will deteriorate.

I took Blitz to a fitness completion I was taking part in today because he’s part of my life but at the same I don’t want him to enter kicking off at other dogs, dragging to go and play with them or doing the same to people.

NEUTRALITY > SOCIALISATION

Jeds progress so far😆

Jed is a reactive 6 YO GSD. He’s awesome but he’s unbelievably nervous and because of this he shouts at other dogs…..all the time🫣

When we have a reactive dog, no matter the underlying issue, we loose confidence and inevitably end up restricting exercise.

The result? A lot of energy with no place to go. So it goes into the only thing they are rehearsing…..shouting at other dogs.

And from there it gets worse. The perfect storm.

So….we taught Jed play, gave him off lead freedoms, worked on the tools that were polluted and showed him that the presence of other dogs was nothing to be concerned about.

More to come from Jed. Watch this space🫡

Another transformation after a yank and crank trainer. Whatever method you use…..

Whether it’s positive reinforcement….

A balanced approach….

Etc etc…..

Just make sure you are dealing with the dog in front of you. That’s what makes a good trainer 🫡 not the lane you claim to be in.

Just deal with the dog in front of you

Leash Reactivity work

What are we working on here? Improving Leonard’s feelings towards other dogs and also working on and off the leash. Leonard is better off leash than on because certain pieces of equipment had become polluted.

Excited to continue this journey with these guys ❤️
