This is our lovely vet nurse Nicola. She joined our team a few months ago and has just fit right in. When you meet Nicola you will instantly like her. She is so warm and friendly and she is a cat whisperer. I hope you all like her as much as we do! Welcome to the team Nicola :)

Work experience!

(A note from Charlotte about work experience!)

Doesn't time fly! This was me doing work experience at a lovely farm in Wilsden nearly twenty years ago. Work experience is vitally important for vet students. Other vets and farmers are the people who teach us the most important skills that we need to venture out into the veterinary world on our own.

If you are thinking of becoming a vet, you need to get as much work experience in different animal environments as possible. I had a bunch of amazing people (Mark Ashton the dairy farmer in Wilsden, Richard the pig farmer from Easingwold, Bill Bland the sheep farmer in Malham and Edward Boothman the poultry farmer in Silsden) who taught me so much. I wouldn't be a vet had it not been for these farmers who were all absolutely incredible people and gave me the opportunity to learn from them over a number of years. I found all of these farmers in the yellow pages and wrote them letters asking for work experience. Big thanks to my mum for driving me and abandoning me at farms in the middle of nowhere, often for weeks at a time 🤣.

We get lots of requests for work experience from young people. Experience of animal handling in farm, livery and kennel environments is much more important initially. Once you reach A level and eventually vet school, we are happy to have you with us gaining valuable work experience. We are always very happy to speak to and help anyone who needs advice about entering the veterinary profession! I have been on the panel of vets who help with interviewing vet students at Liverpool for many years and can help you prepare for interviews if you get to that point :)

Meet Ellie! She is one of our vets and has worked with us for a few months now. Everyone has made her feel very welcome - thank you! :) Here she is with Tess the border terrier. Tess is one of our favourite patients and we just pop in to say hello and have a cuddle sometimes!

Lexi had a home visit today for her vaccinations, she was very happy to be fussed by Ellie and Kate the whole time. Much better than a stressful car journey to a practice. 🐾 ❤️

****NEW PET TRAVEL RULES FOR PASSPORT HOLDERS****

New pet travel rules are coming into force from April 22nd.

UK residents taking their pet to the EU using an EU issued pet passport will no longer be allowed to travel with this document.

These were previously issued to UK residents with second homes in the EU. You will now unfortunately need an animal health certificate to travel unless you can prove that your main residence is in the EU.

Don't be caught out at the border! Contact us for more information [email protected].

You need the animal health certificate within ten days of your date of entry to the EU.

Today was a real team effort! We had just finished a team meeting when Charlotte got a call to a dog who needed an emergency caesarian. Our new nurse Nicola raced to theatre to meet her and it was all go! The team at Old Flatts Farm jumped in to help revive puppies and it was a fantastic effort by all involved. A big thank you to everyone who helped and we wish the new mum all the best with her new arrivals :)

He is NOT an easy cat to live with. He is cat aggressive and MUST live in a household without other cats. He needs a large area to live in, preferably outside access
He needs a very cat savvy owner who lives in a remote area with no cat neighbours
