We are an independent vet service, providing compassionate at-home euthanasia & cremations across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Wakefield and Doncaster. My name is Rob and I'm a vet with over 20 years experience caring for small animals. I set up Pets at Rest in 2018 to support families when the time comes to say goodbye to their companion. I keep pets' final moments relaxed and loving, ensuring the final farewell provides comfort for owners.

🌞🐾 As the heatwave continues, there is no shortage of excellent advice on how to keep our pets cool. However, we less frequently discuss why our senior companions—find the summer heat considerably more challenging than they did in their younger years.

It is worth bearing in mind that our older pets find the summer heat considerably more challenging than they did in their younger years. Age brings natural physical changes that make managing hot weather a significant strain on their systems:

Less efficient temperature regulation: An older pet's internal thermostat doesn't function as effectively. They absorb heat much more quickly and find it far more difficult to cool back down.

The physical toll of staying cool: Dogs and cats rely on panting to regulate their temperature rather than sweating. For a senior pet—particularly one managing age-related heart or respiratory changes—the constant effort of panting is quite tiring.

Increased joint discomfort: High temperatures and humidity can exacerbate the inflammation associated with arthritis, making it uncomfortable for them to move away from warm spots to find a cooler space.

Even if they tolerated warmer weather in their younger days, you may notice an older pet struggles more to enjoy the season like they used to.

During these warmer spells, our older companions simply need a quiet, gentle routine. Ensuring they have a cool space to rest undisturbed is the greatest comfort we can provide for them.

There is often a lot of anxiety around how end-of-life care actually looks and feels for a beloved pet. 🐾 With that in mind, I’ve put together a few messages from families who have recently said goodbye to their companions at home. I’m sharing them today in the hope that their words might take away some of the fear or uncertainty for anyone facing a similar decision in the coming weeks.

Our sincere thanks go out to each family for such kind words. 🤍
