One of the best things about staying at Herdwick Barn is that you don’t have to go far to find yourself properly out in the countryside.

Head out of the main gate, turn right, then right again at the end of the road and just keep climbing. Before long, the views begin to open up and you’re surrounded by that glorious Howgill landscape.

No car. No complicated route planning. Just walking boots on, out of the door and up the hill.

Sometimes the best walks really are the ones that start from where you’re staying. 🥾🌿

You can feel it coming… 🍂

That little shift in the air.
The mornings getting crisper.
The first leaves beginning to turn.

Soon it’ll be walking boots and woolly jumpers. Long walks followed by something hearty. A good pub, a good book, and evenings curled up in front of the fire.

Autumn in the Howgills is rather special.

And at Herdwick Barn, you can come back from a day on the fells, light the wood burner, pour something lovely and settle in for the evening. Firewood’s stocked, the views are waiting and there’s absolutely no need to be anywhere else. 🔥🍷

We’re not wishing summer away…

Georgie and his lovely humans, enjoying one of those little moments that says rather a lot without saying anything at all.

At Herdwick Barn, dogs aren’t an afterthought. With fantastic walks, a private secure field and plenty of space to sniff, explore and snooze afterwards, they get a proper holiday too.

Because the best memories usually have muddy paws somewhere in them.

There’s something rather lovely about arriving somewhere and knowing the fire is ready when you are. 🔥

At Herdwick Barn, we don’t just leave you a couple of logs to get you started. Firewood and coal are fully stocked for your stay, so when the evening turns a little cooler, all you need to decide is who’s lighting the fire… and who’s pouring the wine. 🍷

Even at the end of summer, there’s something wonderfully cosy about settling in after a day exploring the Howgills and Yorkshire Dales, shutting the door on the world and putting your feet up.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a stay memorable.

A sprig of rosemary from the patio at Herdwick Barn can find its way into a gin and tonic as the sun goes down, onto the roast potatoes for Sunday lunch, or simply be brushed between your fingers as you wander past for that unmistakable, wonderfully fresh scent.

And that’s rather the point of a stay here.

Slow mornings. Drinks outside. Something delicious cooking. Big skies overhead and the Howgills stretching away beyond the garden.

Sometimes it’s really challenging being an ‘A-lister’. Now they’re insisting I become an influencer. It’s all too much.

So I’ve had a little lie down with my Highland cow and a cosy doggy throw, courtesy of the lovely folk at Herdwick Barn. 🐾

Being fabulous is exhausting work.

There’s no missing the welcome at Herdwick Barn… 💗

Our pink front door has become a bit of a signature, sitting rather beautifully against the old stone walls of the barn.

Step through and you’ll find a cosy retreat with views towards the Howgill Fells, superfast WiFi, a wood burner for cooler evenings and plenty of space outside to enjoy the peace and quiet.

We rather like a holiday cottage with a little character. And this door definitely has that.
