Some airlines require mesh/netting over parts of a dog crate before flying because it adds an extra layer of containment and safety 😷

Common reasons include:

* Preventing escape: A dog may be able to push its nose or paws through ventilation openings or manipulate a door.
* Preventing injuries: Mesh can stop a dog from sticking its paws or muzzle through gaps where they could be injured during handling or loading.
* Extra security: During ground handling, baggage staff may need to move the crate around quickly. Mesh or cable ties can help keep doors and fittings from being accidentally opened.
* Airline-specific rules: Some airlines or routes require plastic/metal mesh, zip ties, or other external securing methods depending on the crate design.

Mesh is not necessarily required for every crate: A properly airline-approved crate (often an IATA-compliant kennel) may not need additional meshing unless the airline specifically requires it.

One important distinction: don’t cover the ventilation holes with ordinary netting or anything that significantly restricts airflow. The crate still needs adequate ventilation!
