It’s been a month of dodging the heat and chasing the shade…fingers crossed for Cooler weather to come 😃

As always, a huge thank you to Harvey Browns Farm shop & Brading Roman Villa for the use of both fab venues 😃

With the hot weather making things tricky, our mantrailing teams have been making the most of shaded areas and wide open spaces to keep everyone cool while still getting some great training in.

We have been using some wide open spaces which can make trailing much harder, with the wind able to really move that scent picture around. It’s been fascinating watching the dogs work it out and adapt.

For a bit of fun, some teams have also been having a go at trailing a walking trail layer 🕺. Some dogs found it surprisingly easy and naturally moved ahead to stop the trail layer in their tracks… while others were a little less sure about what this strange new game was all about! 😂

But honestly, the best bit of training for me is seeing the dogs having such a great time. ❤️

Even when it’s tricky… even when they lose the trail and need a little help to find it again… they always get a huge fuss and, of course, their prize pot! 🥳

Seeing those incredibly “pleased with themselves”faces when they’ve cracked it is just lovely 🥰

With the high temperatures we’ve had, I have unfortunately had to cancel and reshuffle quite a few sessions. As frustrating as that is, the dogs’ welfare will always come first. Their safety is far more important than squeezing in a trail, and I’m grateful to everyone for being so understanding and flexible.

That said, we have managed to sneak in some fantastic sessions during the cooler mornings and evenings! 🐕‍🦺

Here’s a little round-up of some of the photos I’ve managed to take over the last couple of weeks. As always, I don’t manage to capture everyone, but it’s been brilliant to see so many teams continuing to learn despite the challenging conditions.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s adapted to the last-minute changes, early starts and later evening sessions. Your support means we can keep training safely while giving the dogs the very best experience.

Here’s hoping for some cooler weather soon… but until then, we’ll keep chasing the shade!

What a week 🥰

Some of our dogs and handlers have been extra busy, squeezing in multiple sessions after the last few weeks of heat cancellations. We’re still keeping trails shorter and making the most of the cooler parts of the day with early starts and late evening sessions.

We also had a fantastic visit to our new RSPCA venue – packed with brilliant real-life distractions! Blowing dog and cat towels, scattered dog toys and plenty of interesting scents meant the dogs really had to focus on scent discrimination.

Today we trailed at Harvey Browns, where we worked on split trails and walking trail layers. Lots to learn, plenty of thinking for both dogs and handlers, and it’s always great to try something new 🙃🙃

As you will see from the pictures, it’s not all hard work… the dogs fitted in a social event after the session today 🍰☕️

As always, the dogs were amazing 😃 Well done everyone ❤️❤️

Early starts, late finishes… all in the name of fun 🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺

We’ve been chasing the shade, making the most of the cooler parts of the day, and the dogs have been absolutely brilliant. Shorter, easier trails, plenty of enthusiasm, and some fantastic outcomes.

A quick snapshot of the fun we have had 😃

Before the heat really kicked in, we managed to squeeze in some early morning sessions this week 😎

A huge thank you as always for allowing us to trail at your FAB venues 😃

With the warmer weather, we kept the trails a little shorter to make sure the dogs could work safely while still enjoying themselves.

We had a brand-new venue to explore, with trails crossing a variety of different surfaces, including long grass, giving the dogs plenty to think about. We also looked at how the scent picture changes in wide open spaces compared with enclosed woodland – it’s always fascinating to watch the dogs adapt.

For a bit of fun, we included something a little different… our “missing person” hid underneath a camouflage sheet! It made for a really novel find and the dogs absolutely loved the challenge. 😄

To dodge the heat we had two evening urban sessions…🐕‍🦺

We worked on junctions, direction of travel and safe road crossings, reinforcing the importance of having a solid stop/wait before crossing any road.

We also spent time looking at how scent behaves in built-up areas. It’s fascinating how scent can cling to brickwork, collect around doorways and become trapped in unexpected places. Add in different surfaces, passing traffic, pedestrians, cyclists and the general hustle and bustle, and it creates a very different scent picture for our dogs to work through.

I absolutely love these sessions……mantrailing is so much more than simply following a trail. Every environment teaches us something new, and every session helps us become better handlers by learning to trust our dogs and understand the amazing way they work🥰

What a great session we had last week at Brading Roman Villa 😎 A huge thank you as always for such a brilliant venue 😃

Whilst the sun didn’t put in much of an appearance, the rain stayed away and the wind made it tricky 💨💨💨

We were able to use the different areas of long & short grass, alongside the wind direction to plan some challenging but great fun trails for the dogs and handlers to navigate.

You could see the dogs jumping through the long grass or lifting their noses to catch the scent trail that had mainly settled on the top of the grass as the trail layer walked through to a hiding spot…😃

The shorter grass pathways allowed us to have trails like roadways, with junctions, gateways and obstacles to navigate around….😃

As always, both dogs and handlers were brilliant 🥰

A huge thank you as always for the use of such a great place to trail 😃

It was a day of two halves with the morning session cut short due to torrential rain and high winds 😃
Great dedication from the handlers though, hunkering down to hide before it got too awful !!

The afternoon saw sunshine arrive, making a much more pleasant trailing session for all 🐕‍🦺

Wednesday was a great urban search day.
Working a trail whilst being aware of roads, traffic & other urban distractions is a real challenge for the handlers.
The dogs know how to follow the trail but the handlers have to anticipate any dangers, stop and start the trail if needed, manage a much shorter line, all while watching their dogs body language and subtle indications. Not an easy task but as always, they did brilliantly 🥰

On an urban trail, things are always changing and challenging the dogs. People stepping out from doorways/crossing roads in front of them, car radios blasting, loud trucks/motorbikes whizzing close by…Not only can it be distracting from the job in hand (and sometimes a bit scary), the movement of all the above can change the scent picture over and over again as the dogs are working.

Hard work for both dogs and handlers but such a great experience 😃🐕‍🦺

We took advantage of the cooler weather early this morning and increased the trail length to help develop the dogs concentration, stamina and problem solving skills.

The dogs handled it brilliantly & handlers did a great job of reading their dogs along the trails 🐕‍🦺

Great work from everyone today ❤️
