I hear it all the time. An owner telling me their dog is doing brilliantly, then following it up with "but I'm just not getting it."

The kindness they show their dog rarely makes it back to themselves. And yet they are both learning. They are both doing the work. They both deserve the credit.

If you have ever felt like you are holding your dog back, I'd gently ask you to look at how far you have both come rather than how far you still have to go. Progress looks different for every team, but it is almost always there if you look for it.

You are doing better than you think.

This is why I love what I do.

When this dog first started lessons, they were a lot to handle. High energy, unable to settle, constantly on the go at home. Their owner was doing everything right but nothing seemed to take the edge off. The walks weren't working. The dog just kept going.

We started hoopers lessons and from the very first few sessions something shifted. The dog went home tired. Not just physically tired but genuinely settled in a way their owner hadn't seen before. Their brain had been working, processing, learning, and that kind of tiredness is a different thing entirely.

A few months in, the owner mentioned it to me almost in passing. They said the dog was so much calmer at home now. That they were actually able to settle. That the house felt different. It was one of those moments that reminded me why giving a dog a job to do matters so much.

Because the transformation wasn't just about the training field. It followed them home. A dog that has an outlet, a purpose, and something to think about is a dog that can finally switch off when the day is done.

That's what hoopers can do. And that's what I love helping owners find.

If your dog struggles to settle at home and you've been wondering whether there is something that could help, send me a message. I'd love to chat about whether hoopers could be the right fit for you both.

Dobby has taught me more than I could have anticipated when I first brought him home.

His reactivity meant group classes were never going to work for us, and finding one-to-one lessons opened my eyes to just how much more you can get from training when it is built entirely around your dog. That realisation shaped everything about how I teach today.

But the lesson that stays with me most is this. Before you ask your dog to focus, ask yourself why they would want to. Is the world too interesting? Is it feeling a little scary? Find what motivates them, and not in a general sense. Find the exact treat they go wild for, or the one toy that beats everything else. Build the value. Build the confidence. Give them a reason to choose you.

When you find that, everything changes.

There are a few things I do differently when I train dogs, and they're not accidental!

I only teach hoopers. That's it. One sport, one focus, all of my energy and knowledge going into one thing rather than being spread across everything. When you book a session with me you're working with someone who lives and breathes this sport, who competes in it, who has trained their own dogs through it, and who genuinely loves it. That specialism matters.

The second thing is that hoopers is for every dog. Every size, every breed, every age, every ability. There is no minimum standard to meet and no dog I would turn away. That inclusivity is one of the things I love most about this sport and it shapes everything I do.

The third is that I only teach one-to-one. Every session is built entirely around you and your dog. Your pace, your confidence, your goals. You are never competing for attention or trying to keep up with anyone else.

And everything I do is reward based. Treats, toys, encouragement, whatever motivates your dog. Because confidence is built through positive experiences and getting things right, not through pressure.

If that sounds like the kind of environment you and your dog have been looking for, I'd love to hear from you. Send me a message to book your first hoopers lesson in Hertfordshire for your dog.

Not every dog can be let off lead.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t need an outlet.
Hoopers gives dogs a safe way to move, think, and burn energy without the pressure of open environments.

If this sounds like your dog, message me FREEDOM.

Some dogs take a little longer to find their focus. And that is completely fine.

This particular dog had the whole field to explore and very strong opinions about doing exactly that. But with patience, persistence, and a lot of reward based work, something shifted. The focus came. The courses came. And an owner who had quietly wondered if they would ever get there got to see their dog shine.

That is what this work is about.

If your dog is full of energy and struggles to settle into training, you are not alone and it is not too late. Sometimes they just need the right space to figure it out.

A dog that runs all day isn’t always a calm dog by the end of it.

Real fitness includes the mind.

That’s why hoopers works so well, it combines movement with thinking.
If your dog struggles to switch off, message me CALM and let’s build better balance.

This is what a safe training environment actually looks like.

No crowded classes.
No dogs running up to each other.
No pressure to “just get on with it”.
Just space.

That’s why all of my hoopers lessons are 1-1.

It means your dog can focus without being overwhelmed.
They’re not worrying about other dogs.
They’re not constantly reacting to their surroundings.
They can actually learn.

For dogs who are reactive, easily distracted, or struggle in busy environments, this makes such a difference.

Training becomes calmer and clearer. It's more enjoyable for both of you.

If you’re looking for a more supportive way to train here in Hertfordshire, message me SAFE and I’ll send you the details.

Progress doesn't always look dramatic. Sometimes it's a young dog choosing focus over distraction for the first time. Sometimes it's a person realising they got every single thing right and allowing themselves to feel good about it.

We spend so much time watching our dogs that we forget we are learning too. The course, the cues, the timing, the footwork. There is a lot to hold in your head, and when it comes together it deserves to be celebrated just as much as anything our dogs achieve.

These are the moments I love most about this job.

What small win have you and your dog had lately? I'd love to hear it.
