Well today was a 1st 🥰 I went out to see a long standing owner for an exciting ‘new horse’ consult, to review his body condition, diet and create a feeding plan for winter. Ok that scenario isn’t a 1st, but hearing an owner (after seeing my last post) say “sorry he isn’t a cob” 😆 warmed my heart ❤️ I am very excited to watch their relationship build (he has about the kindest eye on a horse I’ve seen in a long time), and I’m excited to follow their BE, BD, and BS adventures in the future. 🐎

Today as I met a new client, I walked onto their private yard to see a coloured traditional and out of my non-filtered mouth came the words “you didn’t say she was a black & white hairy”.. to which the owners responded “yeah, sorry”. Now for anyone who knows me, you know I truly understand the love of a Cob. Since when did we have to apologise for our horses being native/traditional vs performance breeds? Yes I work with some amazing race and competition horses, who have even represented team GB. But! my heart will always belong to our native and traditional types. Please don’t let a “my horse is ‘just a’” stop you from reaching out. Scientifically backed nutrition for all x P.S I would love to see pics of your traditional/native horse in the comments, I’ll go first.

Equinutrition wants to thank all the paraprofessionals (vets, physio’s, chiropractors, trainers, farriers, dentists, yard managers, fellow researchers) that have recommended a nutritional consultation with equinutrition. It truly takes a team to keep a horse happy and healthy, but nutrition is the foundation to everything. It’s a rather big flaw in this business model, if I do a good enough job you (horse owner/trainer) won’t need me, so recommendations mean everything 😆 … but it makes me very proud. If your horses team member has mentioned changing feed and you are unsure how to proceed, please just reach out. Be that with your much loved, old as dirt, retired pony or your Chatham winning hopeful.

One of the things I love about being an independent equine nutritionist is just how much my days can vary. Well today I’ve loved how spookily similar the horses were. Today I’ve seen two, 2-yr olds, with two separate owners, in two separate counties, both with healthy body condition scores but both on the leaner side for heading into winter, both needing winter feeding plans that take body condition and a still growing Skelton into consideration AND both named after food. Today was all about Mango 🥭 and Sprout (aka Brussel sprout) 🌱 if you have a ‘still growing youngster’ and are unsure how to adjust their ration heading into winter, please feel free to reach out

It’s a what animal has my overweight horse lost day?? Today’s answer is a GORILLA 🦍!!! A blummin 🦍! A total of 114kg. It’s taken nearly 2yrs, 3 Equinutrition visits, and 1 very dedicated owner. But this particular horse has gone from hospitalised with laminitis and on the brink, to back into work and to quote said owner “she is just so much more relaxed, she is happier, and it didn’t take long into the diet to see she was getting happier”. If you think your horse needs to loose, be that a 🐕 or 🦍 and you are unsure how to do that while making sure they are still happy, please just reach out.

Ok Equinutrition is mad 😡! As an independent equine nutritionist I spend an alarming amount of my working day fighting miss information, and tonight I’ve been contacted by a concerned client whose seen a post that says “horses don’t have a gall bladder so can’t process fat”, now I haven’t seen this post myself. But THIS IS FALSE! Yes as humans if we’ve had our gallbladder removed we can not process fats the same… but guess what??? A horse’s digestive system is different, they don’t need an organ to store acid because they continuously produce gastric acid AND there are multiple scenarios where increasing fat aka oil is recommended and scientifically backed by multiple studies. If you are feeding your horse oil please don’t remove it based on this nutrabologne (Clare MacLeod MSc RNutr Independent Equine Nutritionist brilliant term) and if you are unsure, please feel free to seek support from a qualified equine nutritionist.
