This is a spot I often take dogs to for a swim, but haven't over the summer holidays because it's usually full of people playing in the river...

Perhaps best to keep dogs away for now!

Fergie did something super special today, he told me, calmly and clearly, that he was a bit overhwhelmed and needed a minute.

He'd been doing so well on his walk, when suddenly a DPD van pulled right up onto the pavement in front of us, and the driver hopped out. Fergie does not like any type of delivery or postal worker!

So we turned around and crossed the road, I kept Fergie moving past whilst letting him look, but then a couple appeared behind us with a dog.

We crossed back over after the DPD van and I tried to just keep moving, but Fergie plonked his bum down and sat.

He watched the DPD driver, he watched the people walking their dog. He didn't move, he didn't make a sound, once the van had driven off and the dog was further down the road he carried on again.

My initial reaction was to try and get him away from both triggers ASAP. He'd done so well all walk, and we were so close to his house I was desperate to end on a positive note.

What I didn't initially take into account was just how much was happening in such a short space of time. As soon as he sat down I realised there was an awful lot for him to process, so we waited, and he carried on calmly afterwards.

It can be so easy to get into a bit of a panic and want to get to 'safety', and for some dogs moving away is the best option, a couple of years ago there's no way Fergie could have sat calmly whilst a dog and a delivery driver were in view!

I'm really proud of him for communicating his needs instead of going straight over threshold β™₯️
