Staff spotlight - Annabel

A belated introduction to vet Annabel who joined the Swale team in March this year.

Originally from Hawes, Annabel qualified as a vet from the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh in 2024. After a spell in mixed practice in Penrith, Annabel was keen to be closer to the family farm and is delighted to be at Swale after enjoying placements with us throughout her veterinary studies.

In work Annabel is particularly interested in flock and herd health and longevity of livestock as well as surgery.

Outside of work her passions are in breeding and showing her pedigree Ryeland sheep, stock judging and walking with her 8 dogs. She also enjoys textiles, ceramics, knitting and crochet.

Here’s a couple of photos from a very successful 2026 showing season across all the major shows. Congratulations Annabel!

We are excited to share that we will now be offering laparoscopic bitch spays here at Swale Vets! ✨🐾

A few weeks ago we had the lovely ladies from S A Veterinary Surgeons visit the practice to complete a laparoscopic bitch spay and prophylactic gastropexy on Bria, a 78kg mastiff.

A laparoscopic spay is a minimally invasive keyhole surgery which generally allows for much smaller incisions and offers a quicker healing time than a traditional bitch spay - which was ideal for a big girl like Bria!

If you’d like more information on this, please reach out and speak to one of our vets to see if it might be suitable for your dog.

Today we say a reluctant goodbye to lovely vet Louise 😢. Louise joined Swale Vets in 2023 after 18months working in south west Scotland and today moves on to pastures new.

We’re sure you’ll agree she has been a fabulous part of the team here. We have loved her fun and caring attitude as well as her knowledge of all things cats and ultrasound!

We will miss her but wish her all the very best in the future and are sure to stay in touch.

Good luck Louise!

Last week, vets Ruby and Evie carried out fertility testing on a group of bought-in tups. This involves a full physical examination as well as collecting and evaluating a semen sample under the microscope. 🔬

Fertility testing is a proactive step that can help maximise your chances of achieving a good scanning percentage and tighter lambing period.

A big thank you to Peter for allowing us to share some pictures of his new boys. They were all in tip-top condition and, thankfully, had some pretty strong swimmers! 💪🐏

🐱🐈‍⬛ Did you know even indoor cats can be at risk of serious viral infections?

This is lovely Mavis enjoying some treats and cuddles after her dental yesterday 🫶🏼🐶

Mavis belongs to one of our nurses, Millie, who had noticed some tartar starting to build up on her teeth. We gave Mavis a full scale and polish and extracted two of her lower incisor teeth.

Dental disease is something we see everyday and can cause your pet significant pain, even if they hide it well! Many dogs and cats will require dental attention throughout their lives to slow down the progression of dental disease.

Why not make an appointment to chat to one of our vets to see if they think your pet might benefit from a dental? 🦷

With tupping time fast approaching, now is the perfect time to give your tups a full MOT and make sure they're fit and ready for the breeding season. 🐏🔬🩺

Fertility testing can be carried out either on farm or at the practice, helping to identify potential issues before tupping gets underway.

A little preparation now can go a long way towards maximising your chances of a successful lambing season!
