🇮🇹 NEW: SACC Commentary on the Italian Cane Corso Breed Standard

The Società Amatori Cane Corso (SACC) have released their latest Commentary on the Italian Cane Corso Breed Standard, providing extensive guidance on the interpretation of the official FCI breed standard.

To help make this valuable resource more accessible to the English-speaking Cane Corso community, the British Cane Corso Society is pleased to share:

📖 An unofficial English translation of the commentary.

📊 A comprehensive comparison of the previous Morsiani–Gandolfi Commentary with the new 2026 SACC Commentary.

These educational resources have been prepared independently for the benefit of breeders, exhibitors, judges and enthusiasts wishing to better understand the evolution of the breed standard. They are intended solely for educational and informational purposes.

The new commentary introduces a number of interesting developments, including guidance relating to:

• Breed type and proportions
• Head construction
• Bite interpretation
• Pigmentation
• White markings
• Intact ears and tails
• Movement
• Functional construction
• Judging priorities

Whether you’re an experienced breeder, a newcomer to the breed, or simply passionate about the Cane Corso, these documents provide fascinating insight into the thinking behind the modern Italian interpretation of the breed.

I Molossi Cane Corso supports the work of the Cane Corso Breed Council. Never before has the need for unity been so great.

The British Cane Corso Society is proud to announce the formation of the Cane Corso Breed Council, established in partnership with the Cane Corso Breed Club UK.

Our aim is simple: to bring together those working for the betterment of the Cane Corso in the United Kingdom while respecting the independence, identity and values of each individual club.

The Breed Council has been created to encourage cooperation, promote education, support rescue initiatives, strengthen UK events and provide a united voice on matters that affect our breed.

This is not about one club leading another. It is about standing side by side where we share common goals, while recognising that different perspectives can exist. We believe diversity of thought should be respected, but unity of purpose should always be encouraged.

By working together, we can better support responsible ownership, ethical breeding, education and the long-term future of the Cane Corso in the UK.

This marks the beginning of a positive new chapter, built on mutual respect, collaboration and one shared commitment:

UK Cane Corso Census 2026

The British Cane Corso Society is pleased to announce the launch of the UK Cane Corso Census, an anonymous owner survey created to help build a clearer picture of the Cane Corso population in the United Kingdom.

The census will be open for three months:

10th July – 10th October 2026

We are inviting anyone in the UK who owns, co-owns, fosters, rescues, or breeds Cane Corso to take part.

The aim of this census is to gather anonymised, population-level information about the number of Cane Corso currently living in the UK, their broad regional distribution, age, s*x, registration status, origin, and ownership context.

This information will help support future breed education, welfare planning, health discussions, research, and evidence-based decision making.

Relevant findings will be anonymised and may be made available to the Cane Corso Breed Council for use in breed, research, health and welfare decisions.

No personal information will be published.

WHY DO SOME BREEDERS SKIP HEALTH TESTING?

There isn’t just one reason.

Sometimes it’s a lack of education.

Sometimes it’s because they underestimate the importance of health testing.

Sometimes they believe that if a dog looks healthy, it must be healthy.

And sometimes it’s because ethical breeding is expensive.

Whatever the reason, the outcome can be the same.

Every health test a breeder chooses not to carry out saves them money.

No hip scoring.

No elbow scoring.

No heart examinations.

No eye testing.

No investment.

That doesn’t make breeding cheaper.

It simply transfers the risk.

The risk to the puppy.

The risk to the family who buys it.

The risk to the future of the Cane Corso.

If a breeder is prepared to save hundreds or even thousands of pounds by cutting corners before a litter is even conceived, ask yourself:

What else are they prepared to compromise?

The cost of health testing never disappears.

It is either paid by the breeder…

…or it may be paid by you.

Through expensive veterinary treatment.

Through inherited disease.

Through heartache.

Through the devastating reality that some conditions may have been reduced through responsible breeding decisions.

Don’t buy excuses.

Don’t accept:

“My dogs have never had any problems.”

“Health testing isn’t necessary.”

“The parents are healthy.”

“I’ve never had an issue before.”

Ask to see the certificates.

Hip scores.

Elbow scores.

Heart examinations.

Eye test certificates.

DNA test results.

If they can’t prove it…

Why should you believe it?

Health testing costs money.

Inherited disease can cost far more.

Choose the breeder who invests first.

Education changes breeding.

The Cane Corso deserves breeders who continue to learn, invest and improve. Puppy buyers deserve honesty, transparency and evidence—not assumptions.

Educate yourself before you purchase.

Because the future of our breed depends on the decisions we make today.
