Anyone who knows me knows I have a soft spot for terriers, and look at that face! 😍

Little Peggy has been having physio following TPLO surgery with Anderson Moores and has been progressing amazingly ⭐

This clever girl picks up her exercises so quickly and thanks to her dedicated mum has been able to progress her plan each week. Well done team Peggy 👏

💧 Keeping your dog cool 💧

These hot summer months can easily dehydrate our dogs which can lead to serious health risks and vet visits!

Just like us, optimal hydration is the key to keeping your pet alert and their organ systems healthy. Here are our top 5 tips to a hydrated dog!

🐾 Multiple sources of water 🐾

Dogs can sometimes prefer little and often with their drink intake. Keep several access points around their environment to encourage drinking throughout the day.

🥕 Hydrating foods 🦴

Food can have a big impact on hydration. If your dog is reluctant to drink water, try introducing some bone broth, goat milk, berries, carrots or wet foods to increase water intake through their meals. Water can also be added to kibble for dry food diets.

🦮 Going for a walk? Take a drink on the go!

Carrying a water bottle on walks allows your pet to have access to fresh water on the go.

Remember to discourage your dog from drinking stagnant water. These bodies of water can contain harmful algae or bacteria that lead to gastrointestinal upset.

💧 Pool Party! 💧

Try enticing your dog to play some water based games such as bobbing for treats or fetching a toy in a clean paddling pool. During play, your dog is more likely to take in some water.

Just make sure your dog doesn’t over-drink from a pool, this can lead to health concerns.

🩺 Know the signs of dehydration

Knowing when your pet is dehydrated can make a huge difference in the outcome. Catching these signs early can help you to act faster and get the vet care they require to rehydrate and prevent conditions such as heat stroke.

Hands up 🖐️ who lets their dog jump in and out of the car?

It’s a common occurrence and often seen as the easiest option when dealing with eager dogs on trips out, but did you know this practice could cause more harm than good?

- Jumping out of cars can put the force equivalent to 4-6x your dog’s bodyweight through their front legs.

- This can lead to painful injuries and joint degeneration through your dog’s life, especially those with conditions such as elbow dysplasia, shoulder instability or carpal weakness.

So how do we fix it?

- There are so many great tools out there to help your dog in and out of the car. We recommend fold out steps or ramps. You can even carry your dog out if they are small enough!

- This small step can save your dog’s joints for many years to come, so they can keep enjoying their walks without the discomfort! 🐾

These are the things the top 5 things I hear about all the time as a physiotherapist:

Stiffness that’s getting worse, a pet who isn’t quite bouncing back after surgery, an older companion slowing down, or a once confident dog suddenly seeming a bit unsure.

None of it means you’ve done anything wrong; it just means they might need a bit of extra support.

At Furapy, we use hands on techniques, gentle treatments and tailored exercise plans to ease discomfort, build strength and help pets move more comfortably day to day.

If any of this sounds familiar, drop us a message and we can talk things through.

Short on time? Just 30 seconds a day on these areas can make such a huge difference to your pet's physio sessions!

Handling tolerance plays a massive part when treating your pets. A pet that can tolerate touch is able to get the best from our assessment and manual therapy techniques.

Not all pets are used to this type of handling, so these two 30 second activities can start to help them on their way to being more comfortable with us:

🐾 Paws. Touch your pet's paw. Once you have touched the paw, reward and stop. Start with small holds and build up as their tolerance improves.

🐾 Legs. Gently run your hands down your pet's leg. When you have done this, reward and stop. Work on being able to keep your hands on your pet's legs for longer durations of time. This exercise can also be applied to the back, head and neck areas.

These are small steps, but can really help your pet to relax into their session and get the best out of their sessions.

At Furapy, your pet's treatments are led by a welfare-first practitioner with further training in reactivity. All sessions are at your pet's pace. No forcing, no unnecessary stress.

Hot hot hot! 🔥 ☀️

Rupert and Florrie are spending their time keeping rested in this heat.

Just a reminder, if your pet is feeling reluctant to exercise this week, that is OK! Rest is sometimes best.

Hotter temperatures are hard on everyone and can cause painful conditions such as osteoarthritis to flare.

Our advice this week:

- Plenty of options of shade for your pet
- Slow pace, keep any exercise to cooler early mornings or late evenings
- Plenty of water options
- No forced handling if your pet is less tolerant

Any concerns with your pet in the heat. Speak to your vet! ☀️
