🐾 We (barely) made it! 🌊

One of our absolute favorite walking routes is officially turning into a river thanks to all the recent rain! 🌧️

Albus and Draco just about managed to get through today, as you can see from the video, but it was a close call for me that included scaling the banks and almost slipping in 🫣 🐩🐕

This will definitely be our last time braving this path without wearing our tallest wellies.

Stay safe and dry out there, everyone! ☔✨

Four paws up and a wagging tail,
You tracked our scent and followed our trail!
For every like, comment, and share,
We send a slobbery thank you out there.

You watched us sniff every single tree,
And cheered when we finally went p*e.
Through zoomies, mud, and chaseable sticks,
You stuck around for our goofy tricks.

So here’s a big bark of pure delight,
For making our social feed so bright!
Keep double-tapping, it makes our day,
Now if you’ll excuse us—it’s time to play!

Enjoy this video of Bodhi
enjoying the stream.

🐾 Training wins and gorgeous views! 🐾

Today was the perfect day for some real-world impulse control practice with Hugo the Labrador.
We are so lucky to have such beautiful training spots right on our doorstep!

Hugo was an absolute superstar today.
Not only did he enjoy this stunning view, but he also:

💪 Had an amazing, polite interaction with a lovely Jack Russell.

💪 Watched loads of other dogs pass by with zero reaction.

Days like today show just how far consistent, positive training can take our furry friends. Seeing that focus and calm energy in a busy environment is the best reward.

💼 Looking for a dog walker or trainer?
I currently have some limited availability at Hushers Hounds!

Whether your dog needs structured exercise, socialization, or help mastering their impulse control just like Hugo, I am here to help.

Did you know that letting your dog sniff is just as important as a physical workout? 🐶👃

When your pup stops to sniff every blade of grass, they aren't just stalling—they are actually reading the local "Pee-mail"!

Check out Pepper in this video catching up on all the neighborhood updates. 📩🐕

Allowing dogs to use their noses provides incredible benefits:

Mental stimulation: Sniffing works their brains and tires them out faster than running.

Stress relief: Sniffing naturally lowers a dog's heart rate and helps them relax.

Information gathering: They can tell who passed by, their gender, and even how they were feeling.

At Hushers Hounds we don't just walk dogs—we make sure they get the vital "sniffari" time they need to stay happy and mentally sharp!

🌳✨What’s the strangest thing your dog has spent five minutes sniffing? Let us know below! 👇

🐾 Why a "cool breeze" can be misleading for your dog's safety 🐾

Even though the breeze today made it feel quite pleasant for us, it is still too hot for our four-legged friends.
This afternoon reached 24°C, which is well above my strict walking cutoff of 21°C.

It is easy to think a nice breeze makes a walk safe, but dogs handle heat completely differently than humans.

No sweating: Dogs cannot sweat through their skin to cool down like we do.

Panting reliance: They rely almost entirely on panting to release heat.

Ground heat: The pavement and grass hold onto heat, keeping them closer to the warmth.

Fur coats: Walking in a fur coat traps heat, making a 24°C day feel much hotter to them.

To show you just how fast the heat works, take a look at the gorgeous Draco the Labrador today. Draco is incredibly fit, young, and healthy. Yet, after just a few short minutes playing in the garden today, his tongue was already lolling and he was panting heavily.
If a healthy boy like Draco feels the heat that quickly in his own garden, a full walk out in the sun is a heatstroke risk.

At Hushers Hounds, your dog's safety always comes first. When temperatures creep over 21°C, we swap out strenuous walks for shaded garden play, plenty of fresh water, and indoor mental stimulation to keep them happy and safe.

Watch out! I almost stepped on this little danger-noodle yesterday!

Adders are the UK's only venomous snakes, and they absolutely love soaking up the sun on sandy heaths, dunes, and woodland edges just like the ones we walk our dogs through.

Adder Basics

Look for the zig-zag: They have a dark, distinct zig-zag pattern down their backs and a V or X shape on their heads.

Size matters: They are quite small, usually only about 50 to 60 cm long.

Not aggressive: They are shy and only bite if they feel trapped, stepped on, or grabbed.

Keeping Dogs Safe

Stay on the path: Keep dogs on paths and out of tall grass, gorse, or heather.

Keep them close: Use a short leash if you walk through high-risk spots like sandy heathlands.

Watch for signs: Dogs usually get bitten on the nose or paws because they try to sniff the snake.

What to Do If Your Dog Gets Bitten

Stay calm: Keeping your dog calm and still is vital to slow the spread of venom.

Carry your dog: Do not let them walk; carry them back to your car to keep their heart rate down.

Call the vet immediately: Ring ahead so they can prepare the treatment before you arrive.

Do not touch the bite: Never try to bandage, cut, or suck the venom out of the wound.

What to Do If You Get Bitten

Keep still: Move as little as possible and walk slowly back to safety.

Remove jewelry: Take off rings, watches, or bracelets before any swelling starts.

Seek medical help: Go straight to the nearest emergency department or call 999.

Do not use a tourniquet: Leave the wound alone and never attempt to bandage it tightly.

Just a public service announcement for all my dog-owning friends ahead of tomorrow! 🌧️🥵

The forecast is looking warm, but with a side of heavy rain. It is SO tempting to look out the window, see the downpour, and think, "Perfect, the rain will cool things down, let's go for a walk!"

Please don't!

Warm rain is actually a massive hidden danger for dogs.

When it’s hot and raining, the air becomes incredibly humid.
Dogs don't sweat like us; they rely on panting to cool down.
When the air is thick with humidity, their panting becomes totally ineffective.
They can’t evaporate the moisture, meaning they can overheat and suffer from heatstroke incredibly fast.

Plus, for dogs with thick double coats, that warm rain acts like a wearable sauna, trapping the heat directly against their skin.

So if you see the rain tomorrow and think it’s safe—it’s actually a trap!
Keep them inside, bust out the lick mats, hide some treats around the living room, and keep them cool.
Mental games burn just as much energy as a walk anyway. 🧠🐾

(And yes, this photo of my filthy hand is from my early morning walk today. Evidence that I am absolutely not afraid of a bit of mud or rain! 🪱💩
I will happily get drenched and dirty for my job, but I’ll never risk a dog's safety in the heat.)

Stay safe and stay cool indoors tomorrow! 🧊❤️

Paws everything!

Today’s weather report: Melted. 🫠☀️

It was already 19 degrees by 7:00 AM. That is an absolute "nope" from Lilly the bulldog.
Side-eye was given.
Decisions were made.
Flat-faced royalty does not do cardio in the humidity. 👑

We officially cancelled the march and threw an indoor air-conditioned party.

Today's itinerary:🌭 Inhaling a tin of hot dogs (for "training" purposes, obviously).🧠 Mastering the art of sitting while looking cute.
🥰 Smothering her in a ridiculous amount of cuddles.

Safe to say, Lilly approved of this business pivot. Is your dog currently melting into the floorboards too? Let me know your heatwave survival tactics below! 👇
