“I really enjoy your animal stories and thought of all the people now long gone who also gave their lives to the welfare of animals, and thought how nice it would be to remember them. With that in mind, I am sharing this with you in memory of a very special, selfless lady, Eileen Watkinson MBE.
In the mid-1970s I was lucky enough to get a part-time job at Three Owls Bird Sanctuary, based in Norden, Rochdale, run by Eileen Watkinson.
Eileen started the Sanctuary in the 1960s in Oldham, after her husband died, moving to Norden, Rochdale when the premises in Oldham became too small. Eileen gave 100% of her time to the injured birds in her care. She never turned a bird away and rehabilitated and released whenever possible, rehoming the ones that couldn’t go back to the wild. She was always up at around 4 or 5am every morning, worked all day and only left the Sanctuary once a year at Christmas. I spent many happy years as a shorthand typist for Eileen. Manning the phones to give her some much needed rest in the middle of the day, often sharing my freezing cold, draughty office with her beloved dog Bodger.
The work is still ongoing in Eileen’s and the Sanctuary’s name. Further information on the Sanctuary, the work done and work still going ahead can be found at http://www.threeowls.co.uk/.
I think it is important that we remember people like Eileen Watkinson MBE, who gave so much of themselves in a time when we didn’t have the internet and social media to spread the word. May their memory live on.”
Thank you Greta for this great idea to celebrate the life of someone who worked so tirelessly and passionately for the welfare of our wild birds. What an inspiration Eileen is, and thank goodness for people like her. May her legacy continue to grow and her message about our responsibility to care for our wild animals as well as our animal family members be spread far and wide x
