🧠✨ Sniff. Search. Think. Thrive. 👃🐾
For me, a great day out with the dogs isn’t just about how many miles we walk. Physical exercise is important, but mental enrichment is just as valuable when it comes to helping dogs feel happy, settled and fulfilled 💛
Today’s brain game was a simple one — but SO much fun! 🐶
I hid tasty treats underneath colourful cones and amongst the long grass, then let the dogs use their noses and problem-solving skills to work out where they were 👃🌿
It might look like they’re simply hunting for treats, but there’s actually so much going on…
🐾 It lets dogs be dogs
Sniffing, searching, exploring and foraging are all natural behaviours. Giving dogs opportunities to use these instincts can be incredibly satisfying and enriching.
🧠 It works their brains
They have to investigate, make choices and problem-solve rather than simply being shown where the reward is. Mental activities can be surprisingly tiring — especially when that incredible sense of smell is involved!
💛 It builds confidence
Giving dogs safe, achievable challenges and allowing them to work things out at their own pace can help them become more confident and independent.
🌿 It encourages calm
Not every activity needs to involve running at 100mph! Sniffing and searching gives energetic dogs something positive to focus on and can help create a calmer, more settled experience.
🤝 It helps me build trust with them
Spending time understanding what each dog enjoys, encouraging them without putting pressure on them, and celebrating their little successes helps me build a strong, trusting relationship with every dog in my care.
And one of the most important parts? I let them do it at their own pace. Some dogs dive straight in, while others prefer to investigate slowly — and both are absolutely fine. Enrichment should be enjoyable, never something a dog feels pressured into.
That’s why, for me, it’s never “just a walk.”
It’s exercise, enrichment, sniffing, exploring, learning, confidence-building, social time and plenty of fun — and I always try to tailor what I do to the individual dogs in front of me. 🐕💚
Because caring for dogs isn’t simply about tiring them out.
It’s about understanding their needs, giving them choices, building their confidence and creating opportunities for them to feel happy and fulfilled ✨
🐾 Their Walk. Their Pace. Their Happy Place 🐾
