🐾💙 A little update on Darcy! 💙🐾

Some of you might remember this gorgeous girl from a previous post, but it’s time for a little update on Darcy! 🥹

Darcy is our lovely Cocker Spaniel × Poodle mix customer, who we get to spend time with during her pet sits. She’s a few months older since we last shared her with you, but she’s still very much a puppy with lots of growing and learning ahead of her! 🐶💕

Confident, energetic and affectionate, Darcy has plenty of personality, and it’s lovely to watch her continue to develop as she gets older. 💙

During our time together, we’ve been practising recall, socialisation and loose-leash walking. These are important skills for any growing puppy, and we’re making the most of our time together to help reinforce those foundations as she navigates the big, exciting world around her. 🌎🐾

Puppyhood is such an important stage, full of new experiences, learning opportunities and plenty of development. Building these skills gradually helps set them up for the future, and we’re pleased to be able to incorporate that into Darcy’s time with us alongside her regular pet sits. 🥰

It’s lovely to have this little lady back on the Muddy Mayhem page, and we can’t wait to share more of our time with her as she grows! 💙🐕

🐾 A little Ellie & Lizzie update! 💙

Our lovely Ellie & Lizzie have been part of the Muddy Mayhem crew for a while now, but I realised it had been a little too long since these two gorgeous girls had made an appearance! 🥹

These two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are absolute sweethearts. Both are such soft, affectionate girls and are always lovely to have out on their walks. 💕🐾

It’s been so lovely getting to know them better over the time we’ve been walking them, and they’ve become two very familiar faces around here!

Just look at those little faces… how could you not love them?! 🥹💙

Here’s to plenty more walks, cuddles and muddy paws with these two! 🌿🐶

💙🐾 A NEW BABY HAS JOINED THE MUDDY MAYHEM CREW! 🐾💙

Everyone, meet Bruce! 🥹🐶

Bruce is our newest little client and a gorgeous 4-month-old Cocker Spaniel who has recently joined the Muddy Mayhem family. His family have brought us on for pet sitting visits while they’re out for the day, so we get to spend some lovely one-on-one time with this little man and make sure he has plenty of company, enrichment, play and attention throughout the day. 💙

And what can I say about Bruce other than… PUPPY! 😂

He is the sweetest little boy, absolutely bursting with energy and curiosity, and currently has the coordination of a baby giraffe. 🦒😂 He is wonderfully clumsy, which has resulted in plenty of very entertaining puppy moments already.

He’s still so young, so we’re really looking forward to getting to know him properly as he grows and watching his personality develop. 🥹 There’s something so lovely about getting to meet our clients when they’re tiny and being able to become a familiar, trusted face in their lives as they grow up.

And of course, Bruce has already made himself at home around the rest of the Muddy Mayhem crew. 💙

One of the highlights so far has been watching him have some proper puppy playtime with our own Standard Poodle puppy, Artemas. 🐩🐶

These two are very much on the same wavelength when it comes to being young, energetic and slightly chaotic, so there has been plenty of bouncing around, chasing, wrestling and generally forgetting that they have four legs to coordinate. 😂

They make a seriously adorable pair, and naturally I had to take approximately a million photographs of them together. 📸🥹

So you’ll be seeing quite a lot of Bruce on the page from now on!

🐾 Meet Finn & Jess! 🐾

These two familiar faces have appeared on our page before, but previously they were only joining us for drop-in visits. Now they’ve officially become walking clients! 💙

Finn is a gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 🐶 and Jess is a beautiful English Springer Spaniel 🌿🐾

I’m really looking forward to getting to know them even better and taking them out for their walks, with plenty of sniffing, exploring and enrichment along the way!

It’s always lovely when clients we’ve previously done drop-ins for become regular walking clients, and I’m excited for plenty more adventures with these two. 🥰🌿

🐾 Reactive doesn’t always mean aggressive

Meet Roly. ❤️

Roly is a 6-year-old Labrador who I’ve been working with for over 2 years now.

When we first started working together, Roly was dog selective and highly reactive around other dogs. His reactions could include barking, lunging, fixating and pulling, particularly when he was excited or frustrated.

And this is where I think it’s really important to remember that reactivity isn’t one single thing.

A reactive dog isn’t automatically an aggressive dog.

Reactivity can come from frustration, excitement, fear, anxiety, insecurity, over-arousal, or a combination of different things. Two dogs can look very similar on the end of a lead while having completely different emotions and motivations behind their behaviour.

For Roly, a big part of his reactivity was excitement and frustration.

Our work hasn’t been about forcing him to greet dogs or making him “socialise” with every dog he sees.

In fact, we never do on-lead greetings with any of our dogs.

Instead, we’ve worked heavily on things like:

🐾 Engagement with his handler
🐾 Disengagement from other dogs
🐾 Neutrality
🐾 Learning to exist around dogs without needing to interact with them
🐾 Managing his arousal levels
🐾 Building appropriate social skills in controlled environments

And look at him now. 🥹

Roly is now able to walk as part of our group walks with dogs I’ve carefully selected for him. He can enjoy being around them, engage with me, and move through the environment without needing to constantly interact with the other dogs.

That doesn’t mean Roly suddenly loves every dog.

It doesn’t mean he’ll become a dog who wants to say hello to every Labrador he sees.

And honestly, he doesn’t need to.

The goal isn’t always “my dog must be friends with every dog.”

Sometimes the goal is simply:

“I can see another dog, and I can carry on with my life.”

And I think that’s one of the most important things we can teach a reactive dog. ❤️

Every reactive dog is an individual. Before deciding what a dog needs, we need to understand why they’re reacting in the first place.

Because barking, lunging and pulling are behaviours.

They’re not the whole story.

Reactive ≠ aggressive.
Reactive ≠ unsocialised.
Reactive ≠ broken.

Sometimes, they just need someone willing to listen to what the behaviour is actually telling us. 🐾💙

Willow 💚

A little appreciation post for Willow, who has been coming to us for well over a year now, and I think we’re getting close to the year mark! 🐾

Willow is a mixed-breed girl of around 5 years old, and one thing that has always stood out about her is her dog neutrality.

Willow isn’t particularly interested in playing with other dogs. She doesn’t need to say hello to every dog she sees, and she doesn’t spend her time looking for interaction. She is simply happy to exist around them. She can walk around, sniff, explore, settle and carry on with her day while other dogs are doing their own thing.

And honestly, that is a skill worth celebrating.

We talk a lot about socialisation and having dogs that are comfortable around other dogs, but being comfortable doesn’t necessarily mean wanting to play with them.

Neutrality means your dog can see another dog and think:

“Cool. Anyway…” 😂

And this is particularly important for dogs who are excitement reactive.

A dog doesn’t have to be aggressive towards other dogs for their reactions to become difficult to manage. Some dogs are desperate to get to other dogs because they’re excited, frustrated or simply haven’t learned that seeing another dog doesn’t automatically mean they get to interact.

Teaching neutrality can give those dogs another option.

Instead of:

DOG!!! I NEED TO GET THERE!!!

we want to work towards:

Oh, there’s a dog. I’m going to carry on with my human.

Willow is a lovely example of how peaceful it can be when dogs don’t feel the need to interact with every dog around them. ❤️

Of course, she does have a couple of dogs she particularly likes, including Roly, our lovely older Labrador, and my Pointer, Jacob. But even with dogs she knows and likes, she doesn’t need to constantly engage with them.

And that’s the important distinction.

Social doesn’t have to mean social butterfly.

Sometimes the goal isn’t for your dog to love every dog they meet.

Sometimes the goal is simply for them to be able to exist peacefully in the same environment.

Willow didn’t come to us needing to learn this. She’s always been naturally neutral, but she’s been a brilliant example for some of the other dogs we work with who are learning that other dogs can simply be part of the scenery. 🐶💚

Would you consider your dog neutral around other dogs, or are they more of a “MUST SAY HELLO IMMEDIATELY” type? 😂

A little appreciation post for this handsome boy Jac 🐾🤎

He’s been a regular face around here for quite some time now, but I wanted to share a few photos of him and talk a little about something that’s really important to me when it comes to dog training and enrichment.

He’s a lovely representation of a working-line English Springer Spaniel, and because of that, we make a conscious effort to give him outlets that actually reflect what his breed was developed to do.

Alongside his normal walks, training and play, we regularly do scent work, retrieving and gundog-style work out in the field. It gives him an opportunity to use that incredible nose, work alongside his handler, search, retrieve and problem-solve in a way that is genuinely meaningful to him.

I’m a big believer in breed-specific enrichment. 🐶

Our dogs weren’t all originally bred simply to be companions. They were developed for particular jobs, and those instincts don’t magically disappear because they now sleep on our sofas.

A Springer has been bred to search, flush and retrieve. A terrier has been bred to hunt. A herding breed has been bred to control movement. A retriever has been bred to retrieve.

That doesn’t mean every pet dog needs to become a working dog, but understanding why your dog was bred can give you a whole new toolbox for meeting their needs.

Sometimes the best enrichment isn’t just tiring a dog out physically. It’s letting them use the brain, instincts and skills that generations of breeding have put inside them.

And honestly, watching a dog light up when they get to do what they were made for is pretty special. 🤎

🐾 Meet Lily, Daisy & Jack! 🐾

I’m currently on my first pet sit with this gorgeous trio, and I’m already completely smitten with them! 💙

Lily and Daisy are both Whippets, while Jack is their Whippet x Staffy brother. I’ll be staying with them for the whole week, keeping them company in their own home and making the most of their beautiful land for walks and playtime.

The two younger girls have absolutely LOVED having somewhere to stretch their legs. They spend their time flying around the fields, chasing each other and having the best little Whippet play fights. 😂 There is absolutely no shortage of zoomies here!

And then we have Jack, our lovely older gentleman at around 13 years old. 🥹 He may be the eldest of the three, but he certainly still knows how to have fun. His favourite activities so far include rolling around in the grass, supervising his sisters and, apparently, stealing the doorstop and proudly carrying it around the house whenever he gets excited. 😂

Daisy has also decided that closed doors are simply a personal challenge and has become rather good at opening them herself!

All three have been incredibly affectionate so far and are turning into my little shadows, following me around and making sure I’m never left unattended for too long. 💙

We’re only two days into our week together, so I’m sure there will be plenty more adventures, zoomies and questionable doorstop-related activities to come!

I have a feeling these three are going to become regulars. 🐾💙

🐾 Meet Bruno! 🐾

We’re back visiting another one of our lovely regular households, but this time there’s a brand-new face to introduce! 🐱💙

Bruno is just a little ginger kitten and has already completely stolen my heart. I’m honestly obsessed with him! 🥹

He’s joined a very busy household alongside 3 other cats and 2 rabbits, so there’s certainly plenty of company around here!

During my drop-in, Bruno was being his adorable kitten self, including attempting to launch an attack on the lanyard attached to my keys as I was trying to leave. 😂 Clearly, he wasn’t quite ready for me to go!

I have a feeling this little ginger boy is going to be a firm favourite. 💙🐾

We’ve got a new little face to introduce to the Muddy Mayhem family! 💙

Meet Blu, the gorgeous blue budgie who has recently joined one of our regular customer households. 🥰

Whilst our visits are for the dogs in the house, I couldn’t resist saying hello to Blu while I’m there! 🦜💙 He’s far too cute to just walk past!
