🤍🐾 Meet Oreo — a beautiful soul who deserved the gentlest goodbye. 🐾🤍

Oreo was a magnificent 20-year-old Maine C**n, a big, handsome boy who had clearly been cherished throughout his long life. ❤️

Sadly, life had brought some heartbreaking changes for Oreo’s family. His dad had recently passed away, and his mum was living in a care home with severe Alzheimer’s. It was clear that Oreo, too, was nearing the end of his journey.

Although photos didn’t tell the whole story, in person it was obvious just how frail he had become. Beneath that beautiful, fluffy coat was an extremely thin old gentleman who was no longer comfortable or enjoying life as he once had.

When Dr Vicky and Dr Suzen arrived, Oreo greeted them with a couple of friendly hellos before making it very clear that he wasn’t keen on being handled. And that was absolutely fine. ❤️

Their priority was to listen to Oreo, respect his boundaries and make sure his final moments were as peaceful and stress-free as possible.

Thankfully, his weakness was soon discovered… Lick-e-Lix! 😻❤️

While Oreo happily tucked into his favourite treat, completely absorbed in every last lick, they were able to gently administer his sedative without any fuss, restraint or unnecessary handling.

He finished the whole packet before settling down peacefully as the medication took effect, gradually drifting off to sleep.

No struggle. No fear. No stressful handling.

Just a handsome old boy enjoying something he loved, surrounded by kindness, and being allowed to relax in his own time. 🤍

Sometimes, the smallest things make the biggest difference. A favourite treat, a little patience, a gentle approach and the willingness to let an animal set the pace can turn what might otherwise be a frightening experience into a calm and loving goodbye.

For Oreo, who had experienced so much change in his final chapter, we hope we were able to give him the peaceful farewell he deserved. 🐾❤️‍🩹

Sleep peacefully, gorgeous Oreo. 🌈🤍

Twenty years of memories, a lifetime of love, and one final packet of Lick-e-Lix. You will be remembered with such tenderness. ❤️

Sometimes, the gentlest moments are the simplest ones. ❤️‍🩹🐾

Tango’s mum had planned something very special for his final day: a Magnum.

Not because Tango ate the ice cream — but because he absolutely loved getting the stick afterwards and licking off that last little bit of cream 😻

So there he sat, patiently watching and waiting while Mum finished her ice cream, knowing his favourite bit was coming.

And that was our moment.

Tango was still very much a ginger boy — sensitive, alert and aware of what was happening around him. Rather than interrupt this lovely moment or make him anxious, Dr Suzen quietly gave his sedation injection while all his attention was on Mum and that precious ice-cream stick.

He didn’t notice.

No restraint. No frightening build-up. Just Tango, his mum, his favourite treat… and then gently becoming sleepy. ❤️

This is at the heart of Dr Suzen’s approach to cat euthanasia at home.

After 20 years of providing home euthanasia and helping thousands of cats have a calm and peaceful goodbye, she knows there is no single technique that works for every cat.

The key is time.

Time to meet them in their own environment.
Time to understand their personality, health restrictions and energy.
Time to find the right moment.
And the experience to know how and when to act.

For many cats, sedation can be given almost unnoticed during a treat, cuddle or little distraction — just as it was for Tango. For more anxious or “spicy” cats who still have plenty of fire in them, we can plan ahead and use oral pre-sedation where appropriate.

Every cat is different. The goal is always the same: as little fear and stress as possible, and a peaceful goodbye surrounded by the people and things they love.

Cat home euthanasia is one of Dr Suzen’s particular areas of expertise, built through two decades of experience and thousands of individual goodbyes and making her one of the UK’s top cat home euthanasia vets 💜

And sometimes, all that experience comes together in one tiny, perfect moment…

…waiting for the end of a Magnum. ❤️‍🩹🐾

Thank you to Tango’s family for allowing us to share such a precious moment.

If you’re worried about how your cat will cope with their final goodbye, please get in touch with us. We’re happy to talk through your cat’s personality, circumstances and options in advance, so that when the time comes, you have a plan tailored specifically to them 🙏🏼

🕊️ Memorial Monday 🕊️

Rescued from Ireland as a pup, Jambo grew into the most beautiful boy….

When the time came, he was still happily playing with his soft toy and “showing off” to his special guest — despite lymphoma making it difficult for him to breathe. He was still thinking of his humans, still wanting to please them, still being Jambo. 💔❤️‍🩹

The focus was on talking through his needs, listening and ultimately helping him breathe freely and run again — without pain or struggle, giving him the peaceful release he so deserved. 🙏🏼

It is such a privilege to be welcomed into these precious final moments and to help a much-loved companion leave this world peacefully, at home and surrounded by the people they love.

Run free, beautiful Jambo. 🌈🐾💜 Suzen Gregersen

“How will I know when it’s time?” 🐾❤️

It’s one of the most difficult questions we’re asked — and one that comes from a place of enormous love.

When our animals have been part of the family for many years, it can be hard to notice gradual changes. We naturally adapt around them: moving their bed closer, helping them up the stairs, tempting them with different foods. These little acts of love can sometimes make it harder to see how much their quality of life has changed.

A helpful way to look at quality of life is to think about your pet’s whole day, rather than one particular symptom.

Consider their comfort. Can they rest and sleep peacefully? Are pain, breathlessness, anxiety or other symptoms well controlled?

Think about mobility and independence. Can they get up, move around and go to the toilet comfortably? Are everyday activities becoming increasingly difficult?

Look at eating and drinking. Are they still interested in food and able to eat comfortably, or has mealtime become something they struggle with?

And perhaps most importantly, think about enjoyment. Do they still greet you, seek affection, enjoy a favourite spot in the garden, become excited about a treat, or show interest in the little things that make them them?

There doesn’t have to be one dramatic moment when everything changes. Sometimes the clearest sign is simply noticing that the difficult days are beginning to outnumber the good ones.

Keeping a small diary and marking each day as a good day, mixed day or difficult day can be incredibly helpful. Looking back over a week or two can reveal changes that are difficult to see day by day.

Choosing euthanasia is never about giving up on a beloved companions. When their comfort can no longer be maintained, it can be a gentle way of protecting them from further suffering and giving them a peaceful, dignified goodbye surrounded by love. 🌈

If you’re beginning to wonder about your companion’s quality of life, you don’t have to wait until you’re certain to ask for help. We’re here to listen, answer your questions and support you without judgement or pressure. 💜

Vets2Home and Dr Suzen offer compassionate and unhurried Quality of Life and pre-euthanasia consultations in the comfort and privacy of your own home, 7 days a week.

🕊️ Memorial Monday 🕊️

Beautiful Millie, aged 19, sharing one last peaceful moment with her beloved canine companion before she was gently helped to rest 💕🐾

Thank you to her mum, Natasha, for allowing us to share this special photograph.

Millie was still a beautiful girl at 19, but she was actively dying. Although she had undergone multiple examinations, blood tests, scans, and investigations at two different veterinary practices, there was no single diagnosis to explain what her family could already see—she was reaching the natural end of her life.

Growing old isn't a disease, and technology doesn't always detect the profound changes that come with the final stages of life. Sometimes, experience, careful observation, and listening to both the animal and their family are just as important as test results when assessing quality of life.

Being surrounded by love, familiar faces, and her best doggy friend made Millie's final goodbye peaceful and full of comfort. ❤️

A gentle reminder: we do not recommend allowing cats to have a "nature goodbye," as they often hide illness and can deteriorate very quickly, leading to unnecessary suffering.

Run free, beautiful Millie. You were so very loved 🌈💜

International Dog Day is about celebrating life. So show us what that looks like. 🐾

The big adventures, the tiny routines, the completely ridiculous habits — the things that make your gorgeous dog, your dog.

For us, caring for dogs at the end of their lives means we’re constantly reminded just how much living comes before the goodbye….

So today, we want the comments to belong to them. This International Dog Day, we’d love to fill our comments with the dogs who have shaped our lives — those still beside us and those we’ve had to say goodbye to. ❤️

📸 Post a photo of your dog doing something they absolutely love and tell us what’s happening.

Window down?
Favourite walk?
Occupying 90% of the sofa?
Waiting beside the treat cupboard with suspicious optimism?

Remembering and celebrating thousands of walks, countless treats, unforgettable personalities and very, very special dogs.

And that feels like a worthwhile way to mark International Dog Day.💜

Let’s fill the day with dogs being perfectly…. dogs. 🐾

(And this is Quaver living his absolute best life 💕)

We had the privilege of helping beautiful Nasus, a nearly 15-year-old Alaskan Malamute, find her peaceful rest at home. 🌹🐾🤍

Sometimes our beloved companions seem to hold on with every ounce of strength for one final goodbye. Nasus did just that, waiting for her mum, Georgie, to return home from Japan just two days ago.

Those precious final days were filled with love—homemade soups, gentle care, countless cuddles, and very little sleep as they soaked up every last moment together. Georgie needed reassurance that this was exactly what a loving goodbye should look like. Nasus, ever the stoic and devoted girl, was gently telling everyone it was her time.

Even in her final hours, she still tried so hard to make it outside, determined not to toilet indoors, with the loving support of her favourite person by her side. Her final sleep was spent peacefully on Mum's knee—the place she loved most.

From the day she came home at six months old, Nasus filled nearly 15 years with unconditional love, loyalty, and unforgettable memories.

A heartfelt thank you also to their wonderful neighbour, Maria, who stepped in to take Nasus for one last veterinary visit while Georgie was travelling home. Your kindness gave them the gift of time—the chance to share those final goodbyes together.

Run free, sweet Nasus. Thank you for a lifetime of love and for reminding us that the greatest gift we can give our pets is to be there when they need us most. Rest peacefully, beautiful girl. 🌈💜🐾

🌿🐾 A Very Special Day for Peaceful Pet Goodbyes in Nature 🐾🌿

Dr Suzen had the wonderful opportunity to join Sarah Gorrell on BBC Sussex in Brighton to talk about the launch of Peaceful Pet Goodbyes in Nature. 🎙️❤️

Peaceful Pet Goodbyes in Nature is at the heart of what we’re creating — a beautiful, peaceful, bespoke and natural way for families to say goodbye to their beloved dog in their favourite outdoor location 🌳🌸🐾

We know how deeply animals are loved and how incredibly difficult that final goodbye can be. Our vision is to offer families the opportunity to create a gentle, meaningful and totally personalised farewell, in any tranquil natural setting, where there is space to reflect, remember and celebrate a very special life in a unique way.

Being surrounded by nature can bring a sense of calm when emotions are overwhelming. It gives families somewhere beautiful to pause, share memories and say goodbye in a way that feels right for them and their precious companion. 🌿❤️

This is about love, dignity, compassion and connection — recognising that our dogs are family and that their goodbye deserves to be just as special as the life they shared with us. 🐶🐱🐾

We’re so grateful to Sarah Gorrell and BBC Radio Sussex for giving us the opportunity to share this vision and explain why Nature Goodbyes means so much to us.

It was also wonderful to see this pioneering venture featured in The Argus too! 🥰🐾 What an incredible launch 🙏🏼

Beautiful flowers for Sarah — because we are so incredibly grateful for the wonderful feedback, flowers, chocolates and heartfelt messages we receive from our families. ❤️🐾
