The body: beyond medicine and exercise

When we think about a dog’s health, we often think about veterinary care.

Vaccines.
Medications.
Injuries.
Routine checkups.

And when we think about fitness, we often think about exercise.
Walks.
Runs.
Trips to the dog park. Rounds of fetch. Even treadmills for dogs are a thing in the 21st century.

But in animal welfare science, the Third Domain of Animal Welfare - Health & Fitness - goes much deeper than medicine and exercise alone.

In the Five Domains model described by Mellor and colleagues, this domain considers the entire functioning of the brain-body system.

We know how Health & Fitness can influence how animals feel in their bodies and how it can influence behavior. We appreciate the importance of referring canine clients to their vets when we suspect any medical problems.

But the relationship goes both ways in animal welfare science.

Compromised physical Health and Fitness (and related pain, vulnerability, weakness, exhaustion, distress, etc.) can strongly influence an animal’s ability to thrive from Nutrition, cope with their Physical Environment, navigate Behavioral Interactions, & experience a healthy Mental State.

At the same time, experiences arising from these other domains can also influence Health & Fitness:
▪Unnatural, improper, or insufficient diets in Nutrition can foster obesity, digestive diseases, and cascades of other physiological & emotional consequences for welfare.
▪Overstimulating Physical Environments with noxious sensory information and nothing but floors and concrete to walk on can stress the mind, tax joints, & weaken bodies.
▪Behavioral Interactions with the environment or others that consistently frustrate, overwhelm, depress, and restrict natural behaviors and adaptations can create chronic stress and undermine wellness
▪Poor Mental State is not only a reflection of poor welfare - it does, itself, contribute to it directly as well

Over the next few posts we will share Welfare Fun Facts and Welfare Hacks exploring how physical health, movement, strength, comfort, and biological integrity contribute to a dog’s welfare.

For the love of our senior dogs ❤️ 🐾

"Function, Purpose and Joy"These three words have stayed with me, and not because it is easy. It isn’t. But it reflects something I feel very strongly about when we share our lives with older dogs. Their comfort, their dignity, and their experience of the world has to come first. Always.Older dogs...

You Don’t Have a Focus Problem — You Have a Payment Problem

Let’s get straight to it. If your dog would rather sniff a bush, stare at another dog, or fully commit to investigating a rogue crisp packet instead of engaging with you, it’s not because they’re stubborn. It’s because, right now, you’re not the best deal available.

Everyone wants a dog that’s focused and engaged. The kind of dog that chooses them, that looks switched on and in the game. But focus isn’t something you can just demand into existence. It doesn’t come from repeating cues louder or getting frustrated when your dog checks out. Focus is built through value, and value comes from one thing: reinforcement.

The problem is, most people think far too narrowly about what reinforcement actually is. They think about food, toys, maybe a bit of praise if they remember. But reinforcement is everything your dog wants. It’s sniffing, running, interacting with other dogs, saying hello to people, exploring, chasing movement, even rolling in something absolutely questionable. It all counts. And if your dog can access all of that freely, without you, then there’s no real reason for them to choose you.

This is where the shift needs to happen. It’s not about controlling your dog or stopping them from being a dog. It’s about becoming the gateway to the things they want. When your dog starts to understand that access to everything they value comes through you, everything changes. They stop disengaging and start checking in. Not because they have to, but because it works.

And just to be clear, this doesn’t mean I expect my dogs to stare at me 24/7 like I’m the centre of the universe. They’re normal dogs. They sniff, they explore, they take in the world. But when it matters, they engage. And that’s because I understand what reinforcement is and I know how to use it to my advantage.

Now here’s the uncomfortable bit. Most people are underpaying their dogs. You’re asking for focus in highly distracting environments, expecting them to ignore other dogs, to offer effort and precision, and then paying them with something they don’t even value that highly. If your boss asked you to work harder, concentrate more, ignore distractions, and perform at your best, but paid you less, you wouldn’t stick around for long. Your dog doesn’t quit their job, they just mentally check out.

This isn’t about giving more in terms of quantity, it’s about giving better in terms of quality. The reinforcement has to actually mean something to your dog. For some dogs that’s food, for others it’s toys, and for many it’s access to the environment itself. The real skill is understanding what your dog values and then using that intentionally. If what you’re offering doesn’t compete with what’s around you, you’re not really in the game.

The smarter way to approach this is to stop fighting the environment and start using it. Instead of trying to drag your dog away from everything they want, you make those things part of the reinforcement. Focus earns access to sniffing. Engagement earns freedom. Attention unlocks the environment. Now your dog learns that engaging with you is the fastest way to get what they want anyway.

What you end up with isn’t a dog that’s forced or bribed, but a dog that genuinely believes you are the best route to everything they value. That’s where real focus comes from. Not pressure, not repetition, but understanding reinforcement and knowing exactly how to use it.

So I have a question for you…

What reinforcement are you using with your dog?

And more importantly, what’s the most unexpected or unusual reinforcement that’s actually worked?

Because once you start thinking beyond treats and toys, you’ll realise you’ve got far more to work with than you ever thought.
