This National Reptile Awareness Day, we're celebrating the incredible reptiles we share our world with and the importance of understanding them.

Crested geckos were once thought to be extinct for decades, before being rediscovered in New Caledonia in 1994. Our trips to their natural habitat have allowed us to document these remarkable animals, raise awareness of the challenges they face in the wild and help improve our understanding of their care in captivity.

The more we learn about reptiles in the wild, the better we can care for them in captivity.

Got a fussy gecko?

Some geckos need a little more encouragement when it comes to trying something new. From introducing new flavours gradually to mixing familiar favourites with something different, there are a few simple ways to help broaden their diet.

Patience is key. Give them time, keep offering variety and don’t give up after the first refusal.

Our trips to New Caledonia have changed the way we keep our geckos.

From using thinner branches that better reflect what we found them using, to providing UVB and regularly moving feeding ledges around because food isn’t always easy to find in the wild, we’ve taken plenty of inspiration from what we’ve actually observed in their natural habitat.

It’s not about recreating New Caledonia exactly. It’s about learning from the way geckos live there and using those findings to make better choices in captivity.

Unsere Reisen nach Neukaledonien haben die Art und Weise verändert, wie wir unsere Geckos halten.

Von dünneren Ästen, die besser dem entsprechen, was wir vor Ort beobachtet haben, bis hin zu UVB und dem regelmäßigen Umplatzieren der Futterstellen, da Nahrung in der Natur nicht immer leicht zu finden ist, haben wir viele Erkenntnisse aus ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum übernommen.

Es geht nicht darum, Neukaledonien exakt nachzubilden. Es geht darum, von der Lebensweise der Geckos dort zu lernen und diese Erkenntnisse für eine bessere Haltung zu nutzen.

Nos voyages en Nouvelle-Calédonie ont changé notre façon de maintenir nos geckos.

Des branches plus fines, qui correspondent davantage à celles que nous avons observées sur place, à l’utilisation des UVB et au déplacement régulier des points de nourrissage, car la nourriture n’est pas toujours facile à trouver dans la nature, nous avons tiré de nombreux enseignements de leur habitat naturel.

Il ne s’agit pas de recréer la Nouvelle-Calédonie à l’identique. Il s’agit d’apprendre de la façon dont les geckos y vivent et d’utiliser ces observations pour améliorer leur maintenance en captivité.
