Behaviour is about far more than the actions we can see. To truly understand an animal, we need to consider the whole picture, including their environment, past experiences, health, emotional state, relationships, and individual personality.
Sooty and Sweep are a great example of this. Despite living in the same home, they have very different personalities and often choose to spend their time in different ways. Sooty is highly social and enjoys interacting with people, while Sweep is often happier engaging with his environment through foraging and independent activities.
This is why behaviourists like myself don’t just focus on the behaviour being displayed. We look at the wider context surrounding it. The environment, the individual, and the factors influencing that behaviour are just as important as the behaviour itself.
By taking the time to look at the whole picture, we can better understand why an animal is behaving the way they are and provide support that is tailored to them as an individual.
