Poppets newest family member 🐶

Like so many dogs he has got a bit shouty when on lead and he sees another dog.

This behaviour can be through frustration (wanting to play)

Not wanting to socialise

Not knowing how to greet appropriately when on lead

We start training all of these reactions by teaching neutrality. Yes there is a dog there, but it’s not for us.

No need to reprimand or ‘correct’ this behaviour. With understanding of why this happens, we can guide to more appropriate behaviour.

Drop me a message if you have a shouter when walking. 😊🐾

This tiny miss has got herself into a bit of a pickle when it comes to visitors.

Not wanting to be fussed or cuddled, she has got rather barky to convey her feelings.

So how do we work on this? …

We don’t aim to just stop the bark…

We work on the reason for it.

In this case, not wanting to join in with any interaction. When she feels more comfortable and knows she doesn’t have to join in, the barking will stop. 😊🐾

The quiet connection…

Training doesn’t need to be full of verbal cues, with us always needing to give instructions.

Setting a solid basis of line training can create a pup that is happy to follow your lead.

You move, they move….

You stop, they stop…..

No cues needed.

In our loud hectic world, it’s the quiet moments that matter.

This chap was previously very reactive around dogs, what you can’t see is the dogs on the path around us, if you look closely, you’ll see him spot them.

His pawrents continue to work with him to maintain his confident connection with them, he then doesn’t need to be concerned about his environment. 😊🐾

The confidence of freedom..

We are lucky that there is an ample supply of secure fields to assist our training.

They are great for

🐾 Practising recall

🐾 confidence building, when they have equipment on site

🐾 the stress free walk with little to no distractions.

Whilst they do t need to be the sole form of exercise, they are a great stepping stone on your training journey

Working with this chap today on his connection with his mum, and mums confidence with off lead work.

Take your time, there’s no rush…

Lots of our pup pals get distracted, this could be by other dogs, people, squirrels, birds, or in this case, cars and noises.

This technique will work for all distractions, to help your pup realise that they don’t need to get involved with everything they see!

So what to we need to do? Well not much really!

As you can see from the video, we give the pup space to observe and make choices.

Spot the item, then look back at me = praise and reward.

Continue to stare at the item = nothing.

This pup went from running to the end of the line every time a car went past to happily staying near mum, watching them go by.

No cues needed, just space for pup to think.

The ability to engage and work together…

When you can get your pup pal to engage with you, training gets much easier.

A simple way to do this is with a ‘find it’ game. Toss a food reward in the grass, as your pup pal is searching for it, take a step or two away from them. Once they have found the food, they will likely move towards you, this is then praised and rewarded by continuing the game.

Just a few repetitions of this will get your pup rushing to you. 😊🐾

But my dog is naughty, they steal….chew……ignore me……etc etc.

Dogs don’t behave out of spite or revenge, they aren’t stubborn or ignorant….

They just behave, well…….like a dog.

It is us that perceive their behaviour as ‘naughty’ to our standards.

Any behaviour our dog performs is because it is beneficial to them.

If we don’t like a behaviour our dog is repeating, it is on us to show them something more appropriate (to us), and that doesn’t mean we need to reprimand them. How could you feel if you were reprimanded for being you?

Don’t want your pup chewing your furniture? Provide it with a dog safe wood chew and limit free access to furniture.

Don’t want your pup stealing socks? Provide it with regular hunting games and don’t leave it unsupervised around your socks.

Feel like your pup is ignoring you? Ensure it actually knows what you are asking and can complete that behaviour.

Understanding your pup is the best path to get the dog you dreamed of. 😊🐾
