Back pain and poor saddle fit can affect any horse in work, from competition to leisure horses.
Subtle signs such as:
Resistance under saddle
Shortened stride or uneven movement
Changes in behaviour (grumpiness, reluctance to be tacked up)
Muscle loss or soreness along the back
โ€ฆcan all indicate discomfort.
A poorly fitting saddle creates pressure points, restricts movement and can lead to long-term issues if left unaddressed. Regular saddle fit assessments and back examinations are essential to keep horses comfortable, performing at their best, and enjoying their work.
Our team works alongside your saddle fitter and physiotherapist to ensure your horse receives the best care possible.

What is a Canine Dynamic Assessment? ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ

A dynamic assessment is part of a full assessment that takes place during your veterinary physiotherapy session.

The dynamic assessment can included a walk, trot and running from your pet, aswell as assessing other movements such as sit to stand, turning and backing up.

It can highlight strengths and weakness in your pets normal locomotion and gives us an indication when there is something wrong.

During the assessment notes will be written onto reports for you to keep at the end of your session. These can be kept to keep a track of your pets mobility throughout their lifetime and give you a baseline to compare, if things change with your pets health.

This particular case involved monitoring an elderly dog who has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and weak mobitity. Regular session help monitor their mobility, allowing us to monitor and treat the arthritis during flare ups and keep on top of discomfort and compensatory effects from the condition.

If you feel like your pet might benefit form regular physiotherapy get in touch. I run day and evening sessions weekdays and weekends

Grass is comingโ€ฆ and itโ€™s coming fast ๐ŸŒฑ

New data shows that grass growth in Q1 2026 is already above the 5-year national average โ€” and weโ€™re only just getting started
For many poor doers, this is great news
โœ”๏ธ More natural calories
โœ”๏ธ Easier condition maintenance
โœ”๏ธ Potentially less need for additional feed
(Remember โ€“ for some poor doers with clinical issues flushes of spring grass many not be ideal, seek advice if unsure)

But for the majority of leisure horsesโ€ฆ itโ€™s a different story.

Around 70% of leisure horses are good doers, meaning they gain weight easily.
With grass growing faster than usual, calorie intake could quickly exceed what your horse actually needs.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Remember: energy = calories, and intake must match workload and body condition.

Strip grazing or track systems to control access to grass
Grazing muzzles
Turning out on sparse pasture
Increasing movement where possible
Supporting with a balanced, low-calorie diet

Research shows that managing grass intake is fundamental to weight control, particularly for horses at risk of laminitis or metabolic conditions

Key takeaway
๐Ÿ‘‰ Spring grass isnโ€™t โ€˜just grassโ€™ โ€” itโ€™s a significant source of calories
๐Ÿ‘‰ Act early to prevent weight gain, prevention is better than cure

A little planning now can help keep your horse healthier, happier, and at an ideal body condition all season long.

If youโ€™re unsure where to start, reviewing your horseโ€™s grazing and overall diet is always a great first step โ€” and weโ€™re here to help ๐Ÿ’š
