🚩 Sometimes the behaviour you came for isn't the whole story.
I’m currently working with a dog whose family contacted me because of dog reactivity.
But during my home visit, I noticed a few things that raised some red flags for me.
Could they be behavioural?
Possibly.
Could pain or physical discomfort be contributing?
Also possibly.
And that’s exactly why I believe in working alongside other pet professionals rather than trying to work in a silo.
I referred this lovely dog to the wonderful Mandy Meech, Dynamic Dog Practitioner, for a full assessment.
Mandy is amazing at what she does, and we’re now working together on this case so that we can look at the bigger picture and make sure no stone is left unturned. 🐾
Because if pain or discomfort is contributing to a dog's behaviour, simply training the behaviour without investigating the underlying cause could mean we're treating the symptom rather than understanding the problem.
This is why I LOVE home visits.
Seeing a dog in their own environment can give us information that we simply might not see in another environment
I’m looking at:
🐾 How they move around their home
🐾 How they get up and lie down
🐾 How they interact with their humans
🐾 Their body language
🐾 Their environment
🐾 Their routines
🐾 Their responses to everyday situations
🐾 And, of course, the behaviour that brought them to me in the first place
The behaviour is the starting point — not always the whole answer.
And sometimes the best thing a dog trainer can do is recognise when another professional needs to be part of the team.
That’s not passing the buck.
That’s putting the dog first. ❤️
