This horse was showing signs of sensitivity with food prehension and eating- His corner incisors showed symptoms which are typically linked to a disease called EOTRH, in this case Inflamed & extremely receded gums with mobility.

EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis) 🦷 is a painful, progressive dental disease predominantly seen in horses over 15 years old. It mainly affects the incisors and occasionally the canine teeth.

The condition involves:
• Resorption: this is where the calcified dental tissue starts to break down by the horse’s own odontoclast cells reabsorbing the dental structures.

• Hypercementosis: this is the development of excess cementum which occurs as the dental structures are reabsorbed. The body compensates by over producing cementum in an attempt to stabilise the tooth. This results in bulbous or club-like shapes forming at the apex of the tooth.

Signs can include:
• Tartar buildup
• Inflamed or infected gums
• Loose, fractured, or missing teeth
• Bad breath
• Difficulty biting carrots or pulling hay
• Weight loss in severe cases

Diagnosis is confirmed with X-rays, and extraction by a vet of affected teeth is currently the only effective treatment. Horses adapt very well following extraction, and the improvement seen afterwards often highlights just how uncomfortable they were prior to treatment.

Because early signs can be subtle, regular incisor checks are important. If you suspect EOTRH, contact your EDT or vet early.

Young horses develop sharp enamel points as their deciduous (baby) teeth , and then permanent teeth, erupt and come into wear.

Before the age of five, they will shed up to 24 deciduous teeth as the permanent teeth come through.

This stage often coincides with the introduction of bitting and early ridden work, where any discomfort in the mouth may affect acceptance of the bit and behaviour.

Regular dental examinations by a qualified Equine Dental Technician will ensure their mouth is comfortable, supporting a positive start to their ridden career.

How old was your horse when they had their first dental check? 🦷🔎

🐎🦷 Did you know…?

❇️ Whether your horse/pony is ridden, retired, or simply enjoying life as a field companion, regular dental care is essential.❇️

🔹Many owners believe dental checks are only necessary for ridden horses, but all horses and donkeys, regardless of age, size, workload, or diet, can develop dental issues.

🔹Horses teeth continuously erupt and wear throughout their lives, which naturally leads to the formation of sharp enamel points and uneven wear.

🔹If left untreated, dental problems can lead to discomfort, mouth ulcers, difficulty chewing, and weight loss.

✅ For optimal comfort and function, every horse should receive a dental examination at least once a year🗓️
