I NEED TO BE HONEST WITH YOU. 🧡
Some of you know this already, but I struggle with disability shame. Not when it comes to other people, but when it comes to myself.
I have ME/CFS, a long-term condition affecting energy and causing severe fatigue. I also have fibromyalgia, which causes chronic pain, and I'm currently being investigated for POTS, which affects heart rate and circulation.
And what am I terrible at? Prioritising my own health.
I push through, tell myself I can manage one more session, one more task, one more thing. Then I end up in PEM (post-exertional malaise), where physical or mental exertion causes my symptoms to worsen, sometimes for days afterwards.
I'm now officially a part-time wheelchair user for my really long days. I can still walk, but that doesn't mean I can do so without consequences. The impact on my body afterwards can be difficult, and I'm learning that just because I CAN do something doesn't mean I SHOULD.
So, things need to change.
From November, after my birthday leave, my working week will look a little different:
🧡 THURSDAYS OFF
🧡 SATURDAY AFTERNOONS OFF
🧡 SUNDAYS WILL REMAIN OFF
These boundaries aren't just about my health. They're also about making sure Maple Tree Dog Training can run smoothly, sustainably and continue providing the best support possible for my clients and their dogs.
I love what I do, and I've worked so hard to build this business. But I can't keep running myself into the ground to prove I can do everything.
A huge thank you to my friend Dee at Oreo’s Way Dog Training up north. She's helped me challenge my own disability shame, accept myself and recognise that looking after myself isn't something to feel guilty about.
I'm still learning, and I know this won't always be easy. But I deserve the same compassion I'd give anyone else.
It's time I started believing that. 🧡🐾
