Dominance Theory.. let's talk about it.

The idea that dogs are trying to “be the alpha” or take control of you isn’t supported by modern science. Most of the behaviours people label as “dominant” are actually rooted in fear, frustration, lack of clarity, or simply reinforcement history. This is why dominance based training methods will lead to more problems longer term.

When you focus on “being the boss,” you miss what actually matters. Which is teaching your dog what to do, building trust, and creating clear, fair communication.

Although there is now so much more research I still see a lot of people on social media recommending harmful methods which can make finding advice extremely confusing. When looking for advice always find a reputable and accredited trainer.

What to look for in a dog trainer

Choosing the right dog trainer can make a huge difference to achieving your goals and also to your dogs welfare!

The dog training industry is totally unregulated, meaning that anybody can wake up and decide to be a dog trainer. This can be so harmful when certain methods are being promoted by unqualified trainers. Bad training methods can lead to long term behavioural issues overtime. So taking time to ask questions when hiring a trainer and ensuring they are using science backed methods is so important.

If you ever feel uncomfortable about methods that your trainer suggests you always have the right to question or refuse advice if you feel it is harmful.

Training does take time and your trainer should be realistic about goals, helping you to achieve them for the long term and not just a quick fix in the moment.

The dog training industry is unregulated, this means:

- There is no legal requirement to study, be assessed, or follow welfare standards.
- Anyone can create a website and call themselves a trainer.
- This puts dogs and owners at risk, especially with fear, reactivity, aggression, and puppies.
- Poor advice can make behaviour worse, not better.

So when you’re choosing a trainer, you are choosing their education, ethics, and accountability, not just their confidence online.

At Lead the way dog training only positive reinforcement based methods backed by science are used and I am APDT accredited. I will never use punishment or force to scare your dog into behaving a certain way, this will only create more severe problems down the road. Training should enjoyable for your and your dog and never cause them any fear or distress.
