I’m a mobile Galen Myotherapist based in Newcastle upon Tyne, offering canine massage therapy to support comfort, mobility, and overall wellbeing. Galen Myotherapy is a specialised, hands-on clinical massage treatment focusing on the assessment and care of muscular and movement issues. It helps to release tension, improve flexibility, and support dogs living with conditions such as arthritis, inju

ry, or general stiffness. Each session is tailored to your dog’s individual needs and carried out in the familiar comfort of your home — creating a relaxed, positive experience that promotes both physical and emotional balance.

From puppy to old age - tips for healthy muscles for all dogs…

1. Movement does not always have to be walks - enriched environments, treat searches and scentwork all encourage natural movement.

2. Allow your dog the freedom to move naturally on walks - dogs need to be able to sniff and change gaits, and wear a harness that allows their forelimbs to fully extend, a longline can help if dogs cannot be off lead.

3. Cover slippery floors - slipping on flooring could cause longterm issues as well as exasperate existing issues.

Noise sensitivity is often missed as a sign of pain, but the two can be linked.

Detecting pain in dogs can be difficult, but it is about putting together the signs we are seeing - many of these may be behavioural such as struggling with loud or unpleasant sounds, becoming withdrawn and lethargic, becoming aggressive or ‘stubborn’, sleeping in different places to name a few.

If you are seeing signs of pain in your dog consult your vet.

I often get asked about Librela. I cannot comment on whether it is suitable for your dog, but I can point you towards good resources to read about both the pros and cons including this new article by Petpainrelief - Veterinary Pain Management with Dr James Hunt about recent developments.

Enrichment can play a valuable role for dogs with limited mobility. Activities like treat searches or puzzle toys help keep their minds engaged and bodies gently active. Gentle movement supports overall health, helping maintain muscle, circulation, and mobility—without placing too much strain on the body.

Getting a well fitting harness is not just about a specific brand, it’s about making sure that harness fits your dog, and dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

*The shoulders and forelimbs should be free to move
*It should not sit on the neck or across the chest.
*It should sit back on the ribs so it does not nip at the armpits.
*It should be adjustable on as many straps as possible, allowing to adjust to your dog’s shape.
*It should be lightweight.

This harness is from Reg & Bob . The Reg and Bob harness was designed alongside Lucy Tyrrell. Lucy is a qualified Galen Myotherapist with a wealth of knowledge and experience in muscular health.

I get asked a lot of questions about nutrition and it is certainly an important part of a multimodal approach to keeping bones and muscles healthy. But it is not my areas of expertise, so for this post I asked Alexia – Mystic Dog Mama to share her top 3 foods to support good musculoskeletal health.

Alexia says – ‘A fresh, species-appropriate diet lays the foundation for healthy muscles and joints. Whole foods help reduce inflammation, provide nutrients in their most bioavailable form, and deliver vital hydration - something many dogs lack on dry diets. Water is the body’s number one nutrient, and dogs naturally get much of their moisture through food, not just drinking. So, getting as much fresh food as you can into your dog’s bowl is going to massively help overall health. ‘

You don’t have to completely change your dog’s diet, but adding in fresh foods can make a big difference. If you need help be sure to speak with Alexia or better still, join her live demo workshop on Wednesday 20th May 5pm The Dog Hoose, Tynemouth - book instore.

I caught up with Lulu (and her brother Ronnie) this week.

In March Lulu competed in Crufts Flyball as part of . Sharks finished as Saturday champions and overall runners up! And Lulu was only too happy to show me her rosettes and shout about it.

Sports dogs don’t have to be at Lulu’s level to benefit from regular Galen Myotherapy massage treatments. Treatments for all sports and active dogs help -

*muscles recover and heal after intense exercise
*find and treat any areas of tension to keep movement free and reduce the risk of injury
*highlight any areas of the body taking heavy load and recommend changes in routine if needed
*support to develop the right activity routine for your dog, again helping reduce risk of injury

Interested? Send me a message.

Thank you for letting me bask in your glory!
