Rest in peace Monty Roberts 🫡🖤

We want to pay tribute to a true horseman whose work has inspired generations across the world – Monty Roberts.

Monty showed that trust, understanding and communication could achieve what fear and force never could. His revolutionary Join Up method changed the conversation around horsemanship, encouraging people to listen to the horse instead of simply controlling it.

At RJ Equine, we have immense respect for horsemen and women who have challenged tradition in the pursuit of better welfare and stronger partnerships. While our own training is rooted in classical in-hand education, balance, biomechanics and centuries of classical principles, we share the same belief that the horse should always be treated with patience, kindness and understanding.

Every horse has a voice. Every horse deserves to be heard.

Before ➜ After: The Power of Jaw Flexions

The yellow circles highlight the immediate change.

In the first image, the neck appears braced and carrying more tension. After just a few minutes of correct jaw flexions, you can already see the neck becoming softer, longer and more relaxed through the topline.

This isn't about pulling the head into a position—it's about encouraging the horse to release tension in the jaw and poll. As that release happens, the muscles through the neck begin to soften naturally, creating true suppleness that the horse chooses rather than being forced into.

Small changes like these lay the foundation for better balance, movement and self-carriage. Classical in-hand work is about developing relaxation first, because a relaxed horse can truly learn.

(cession de mâchoire) is a cornerstone of the French school of classical equitation.

Pioneered extensively by masters like Francois Baucher and Nuno Oliveira, this groundbreaking technique focuses on mobilizing the horse's tongue, jaw, and hyoid apparatus while standing at a halt.

The Core Mechanics:

The foundational philosophy is that the front unlocks the back.

Tension in a horse's mouth causes a chain reaction:

A locked jaw leads to a stiff poll, a braced under-neck, and a dropped back, which completely blocks the hindquarters from stepping under.
By asking for a direct flexion, the trainer teaches the horse to softly yield to the bit, swallow, and mobilize the jaw muscles.

This relaxation cascades down the topline, freeing the entire spine.

RJ EQUINE – CLASSICAL IN-HAND FOUNDATIONS

I don’t chase frames — I correct them.

Many horses show tension, resistance, or false outlines because the foundations aren’t clear.

Instead of forcing a shape, I focus on helping the horse understand how to move correctly.

I offer single classical in-hand foundation sessions to:

• Improve balance and straightness
• Reduce tension and rushing
• Help the horse soften naturally
• Create calm understanding before ridden work
