FEATURING REGGIE ⭐️

His training is really coming along nicely, his owners are clearly working hard! 🫶

I see it all the time , the mindset that the dog needs to be walked around the block, to the clock tower and back, or along the seafront no matter what.

But if your dog can’t cope, all you’re really doing is rehearsing the unwanted behaviours. The reacting, the pulling, the hypervigilance, the frustration. Every overwhelmed walk strengthens those habits.

Meet the dog in front of you.

If they’re triggered, redirect them.
If they’re struggling, slow down.
If they’re expecting to go left, maybe stop and sit for a minute instead. Watch the world go by together.

Not every walk needs distance.
Not every walk needs a destination.

Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is help your dog feel safe, regulated, and emotionally stable in the environment they’re in, a good dog handler is flexible and is ready to abandon the plan if needed.

Here you see my 3 dogs 🐾

Do they get walked together? Rarely.

they’re completely different dogs with different needs.

I really value giving them 1:1 time so I can focus on them as individuals, not just as a group. It helps build a stronger relationship with each of them, and means they’re not just relying on or copying one another.

When dogs always do everything together, it can sometimes create a bit of over-reliance.You might see one dog becoming more anxious when the other isn’t there, or less confident making decisions on their own. It can also make training harder, as their focus is on each other rather than you.

For me, it’s important that each dog feels confident and settled on their own, not just when they’re all together. That independence creates calmer, more balanced dogs and a more peaceful household overall.

It’s not about never doing things together, but about making space for who they are as individuals too 🤍

Puppies are like sponges 🧽

They soak up the world around them.
Your energy, your routines, your reactions.
They’re always learning, even when you’re not actively “training.” 🧠

That’s why it’s so important to be intentional with what (and who) you surround them with.

However, it must be noted , it’s not always that simple.
Genetics play a huge role too.
A puppy with poor or unstable breeding may struggle no matter how perfect the environment is.
So while environment does shape behavior…
It can’t always override what’s been hardwired.

This isn’t every dog owner.

But in the past week alone, a dog has run up to mine uninvited every other day.

Every. Other. Day.

It’s exhausting.
And It’s becoming suffocating.

The hardest part isn’t even the dogs.
It’s the mindset of the people holding the lead ( that they clearly don’t know how to use) .

A few months ago, me and kane were out training. I had my puppy, Nettle. Kane had a dog who isn’t dog-friendly. An elderly man allowed his two highly reactive dogs to sprint across a field straight toward me.

I focused on creating space and kept calm.

He followed us the entire length of the field, every time I moved he did closely behind.

Kane saw this and calmly explained that it wasn’t okay for his dogs to rush me or anyone , his response was:

“I’ve done it my whole life.”

That’s the problem.

Some people don’t believe it’s an issue.
They don’t want education.
They don’t see the risk.
They simply don’t care.

“He’s friendly.”

Whilst the dog is Fixating, whining , lunging, pulling , tail wagging

“He just wants to say hi!”

But frantic obsessive behaviour isn’t social, it’s a lack of impulse control

And training.

I LOVE a car park , and so does every other trainer!

- Real life exposure to people, cars, trolleys, noises
- lots of space for adjustable difficulty
- flat hard surface, great for heel work and reduces nose diving for grass sniffs

And NO off lead ‘he’s friendly’ dogs
