A busy month for dog sitting, lots of walks, new puppy clients, reactive dog work and FINALLY getting some rain!

It’s been a hot, hot summer and I’m looking forward to the cooler months as we come into autumn 🍁

Dog training isn’t about quick fixes and instant results. It’s a learning process that requires patience, consistency and putting in the effort.

There are loads of human examples that require a similar amount of diligence to pick up and improve a new skill.

🇪🇸 You’d never expect to be fluent in Spanish after one week on Duolingo.
🚗 You wouldn’t expect to pass your driving test after one lesson.
💪You wouldn’t lift the heaviest weights on day 1 at the gym.
🎻 You wouldn’t expect to join an orchestra the very first time you pick up a violin.

Even with our fantastic cognitive capabilities, these are skills that need focus, dedication and time to hone. Expecting our dogs to perfect their skills without a similar level of input is unrealistic.

You don’t owe anybody access to your dog just because they ask for it. That’s why I often say no to people who want to approach my dog and say hello.

I absolutely love dogs (obviously) and I will very often ask if I can say hello to a dog if I’m out and about and it seems appropriate to do so.

If it’s a yes, I won’t come into their space, but I’ll make my body language inviting and open, so they can come to me and sniff if they want.

But many dogs, including my own, just don’t enjoy interacting with strangers, and that’s okay. He gets a lot of attention while out and about because of his unusual markings, so over time I’ve got very good at declining requests to say hi to him.

I encourage all my clients to advocate for their dogs and get comfortable saying no to strangers who want to say hello.

Letting your puppy know when they’re getting things right is the best way to help them learn. Imagine starting a new job, and instead of showing you how to do it, the person training you just says NO every time you do something wrong.

Over time, this will just make you stressed, frustrated and ineffective in your role. And it’s the same with our pups.

Setting up for success and helping our dogs get it right as much as possible from the get go makes training more enjoyable, more engaging and more effective.

Despite what some people would have you believe, positive reinforcement isn’t about sprinkling ‘magic cheese’, distracting dogs with food, letting dogs roam without boundaries or any other of the harmful misinformation that gets spread around. But it isn’t a quick fix either.

Setting dogs up for success, choosing the right reinforcer, understanding breed motivations, consistency, correct timing, precise placement, understanding learning theory, knowing how to illicit, capture and shape behaviour, giving dogs choice and agency in safe ways, managing inappropriate or unsafe behaviour and SO MUCH more goes into training a dog in a positive-reinforcement, force-free way.

Painting it as an ineffective and harmful tool is a crass and frankly ironic attempt at fear-mongering from a group of so-called “trainers” who wouldn’t know a peer-reviewed paper if it slapped them in the face with a shock collar.

Dogs deserve better.

There’s so much more to your dog’s behaviour than just training. To make the best progress, we should be looking at optimising their whole life.

By making sure their physical, mental and emotional needs are well met, we can build a strong foundation for successful training and learning.
