💛 Meet Henry

Henry is a nearly four-year-old Labrador who came to me because his humans wanted a little more control, trust and teamwork in everyday life.

He’s a lovely dog, but he’s big and strong, can become easily distracted and had started becoming a bit reactive while on lead. His family also wanted help with loose lead walking, recall and his enthusiastic greetings when people visit the house.

There’s plenty for us to work on, but we started with the foundations.

For Henry, that meant learning how to walk alongside his humans on a loose lead, stay engaged with them and understand that walking is something they do together as a team.

We want Henry to trust that the humans at the other end of the lead are there to guide him, support him and deal with what’s happening around him.

When we have a dog who is engaged and listening, we have a strong starting point for tackling some of those bigger challenges later on.

Henry and his family now need to make this new way of walking familiar, consistent and normal so we can build on those foundations and start chipping away at the next piece.

Successful training often means getting the basics right first, and that can change the whole picture.

💛 Meet Acer

Acer first started her Tails of Success training as a very young puppy, completing Puppy School with me and learning the foundations she needed to slot comfortably into her new family life.

Now she’s back, and this time we’re giving her a job!
Acer is going to be learning scent detection.

She’s naturally very nose-driven, so rather than trying to stop that desire to sniff and investigate, we’re going to put it to good use.

We’ll teach Acer that when she’s given her search cue, her nose has a very specific job to do: locate the scent she’s been trained to find.

As her training progresses, scent detection will give Acer a purposeful outlet for something she already naturally loves doing.

It’ll challenge her brain, satisfy that desire to use her nose and, importantly, give Acer and her humans another activity they can enjoy together as a team.

Training a Labrador doesn’t have to stop once the puppy basics are done, the next step is refining skills, and giving them a job to do.

💛 Meet Lottie

Little Lottie is still a youngster, but she’s already built up a bank of useful skills.

Since puppyhood, we’ve worked on her loose lead walking, recall, general manners and some retrieval work, all helping her develop into a well-rounded pet Labrador.

In her most recent session, we introduced something completely new to her - scent detection work.

Lottie is learning to find the scent of clove. When she hears her search cue, that nose switches on and her job is to locate the hidden scent.

Once she finds it, she sits to indicate to her handler that she’s located it.

By the end of her first session, she was showing brilliant drive, determination and enthusiasm for her new job, and clearly enjoying the chance to use that very powerful Labrador nose.

Not every Labrador needs to be a ‘working’ dog, but giving them purposeful activities that tap into their natural abilities can be hugely rewarding.

Bringing your first puppy home can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.

Suddenly you’re responsible for teaching this little Labrador how to navigate life, while also trying to work out whether you’re doing everything ‘right’.

That’s why I love starting puppy training early.

Alan’s first session was just a couple of days after he came home. We weren’t trying to create a perfectly trained puppy at eight weeks old.
We were giving his family the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to start building good habits from day the very beginning.

And that support for the human at the other end of the lead is every bit as important as the practical training we do with the puppy.

🧡 Meet Diego

Diego is right in the thick of adolescence.

Which means that some days, his ears stop working!

As Labradors move through adolescence, their motivations change, independence starts to grow and skills that felt reliable can become less polished.

It can feel frustrating, but it’s also a really important and normal stage of development.

With Diego, we’re not expecting everything to stay perfect while his brain and body are changing. Instead, we’re making some things simpler, reinforcing the rules and boundaries he already knows, and reminding him that working with his humans is still incredibly rewarding.

That means revisiting some of the everyday skills that have become a little faded, while also introducing new activities that tap into the natural instincts and traits of a Labrador.

The aim is to keep Diego engaged and motivated to work with his handlers, rather than feeling like all the fun is somewhere else.

We’ll keep working with Diego as he matures so that he comes out the other side as the most wonderful, well-mannered and engaged family dog he can be.

This is Baxter with his human, Ashleigh, during his third session working on his sensitivity to noise.

Over time, Baxter had become increasingly uneasy around the sounds associated with shooting season in the countryside, as well as similar noises such as fireworks.

Rather than avoiding those sounds completely, we’ve been helping Baxter experience them in a calm, controlled and structured way, gradually changing what those noises mean to him.

Today was a HUGE step.

We made it right into the grounds of Barbury Shooting School while clay shooting was taking place around us, giving Baxter the opportunity to work around very realistic sounds.

We didn’t just throw him in at the deep end and hope he coped.

Instead, we’re helping him learn that hearing a loud noise doesn’t mean something bad is going to happen.

He can hear it and remain safe.

His human is there to support and guide him.

And those sounds can actually begin to predict positive experiences.

By carefully changing that association, we can build confidence, tolerance and resilience around something that previously caused him worry.

If your Labrador struggles with fireworks or other noises, it isn’t necessarily something you just have to live with.

There is plenty we can work on, but it needs to be done calmly, gradually and at a level your dog can cope with. Simply overwhelming them and hoping they’ll get used to it can make things worse rather than better.

🖤 Meet Hamish

Hamish is an adult Labrador, but that doesn’t mean his training is finished.

Dogs move through puppyhood, adolescence and into adulthood, and along the way it’s easy for bad habits to creep in, and skills to fade.
That’s why training should never end.

With Hamish, we’ve been refining the things that make everyday life easier for both him and his family.

One of our first jobs was loose lead walking.

Hamish had got into the habit of pulling and making walks harder work than they needed to be, so we found a system that works well for both ends of the lead.

The aim is simple: enjoyable walks, clearer communication and less frustration for everyone.

We’ve also been working on his recall.

Hamish’s recall was already fairly good, but when distractions appeared, selective hearing could sometimes creep in.

So we introduced a recall whistle and made the picture much clearer for him.

Coming back quickly brings good things and it’s what we expect from him every time!

He may be an adult Labrador, but he’s still learning new things, refining old skills and showing that training can make life better at any age.
