Why choose a serge panel? 🤎

Serge panels offer a number of benefits, including excellent breathability and moisture management, helping to keep the horse’s back more comfortable during work.

Serge is a natural, breathable material and whilst it will absorb moisture and sweat it dries out very quickly allowing the flocking inside to retain its natural softness.

The soft, textured surface can also help minimise friction and provide a secure, close-contact feel between horse and saddle.

As always, the panel material is only one part of the bigger picture — correct fit, width, length, tree points, panel shape, balance and even weight distribution are all key to keeping both horse and rider comfortable. 🐴✨

The All Rounder fitted to the gorgeous Orla today 🤎

Orla is a small Cob with a bigger rider, so we opted for the All Rounder to help accommodate her big shoulders, with a shorter panel and upswept rear gusset to suit her shorter back. We also went for a larger seat to give her rider the space and comfort they need.

Previously, her rider had tried a saddle that was the correct size for the pony, but too small for her. This meant the rider’s weight was sitting towards the back of the saddle, rather than being evenly distributed throughout the seat.

The new saddle gives the rider the space they need, allowing them to sit more centrally and distribute their weight more evenly, while still being appropriately fitted to Orla’s shorter back and bigger shoulders.

A great example of why saddle fit needs to work for both horse and rider. 🤎

It is like the Working Hunter saddle was made just for Gypsey ❤️

This gorgeous girl looks stunning in her saddle and I love how the template reflects the improvements to her back since riding in a saddle that’s the correct width for the last 6 months. 😍😍

Had a fantastic day at The Saddle Company learning all about their saddles, getting hands-on with flocking their Surge panels, and adjusting saddle widths using their press. Every day really is a school day! 😜

I am now able to supply, fit, and adjust The Saddle Company saddles across Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Rutland. ❤️

It genuinely baffles me when people say they’ll “wait until their horse stops growing to invest in a properly fitting saddle” or that a saddle is “fine for what we do” because they’re not competing.

The mindset that a well-fitting saddle is something to be earned, or a luxury reserved for certain stages of training or competition, completely misses the mark.

A well-fitting saddle is not a privilege.

It’s a necessity, and it’s our responsibility as horse owners to provide it from the very start.

Especially the argument that a young horse won’t deserve a well-fitting saddle until they’ve reached physical maturity makes my blood boil.

Horses are often started at an incredibly young age (this is a whole other topic I could go on a tangent about), yet many breeds don’t fully physically mature until years after they’ve been started under saddle.

The physical damage that can be done by an ill-fitting saddle during these years of development is astounding. And that’s not even considering the long-term consequences.

Physical damage aside, wouldn’t you want your horse to associate working under saddle with a pleasant experience rather than a painful one?

Look, I get it. Keeping up with a horse's changing body is expensive, investing in a fully adjustable saddle or a disposable (non-adjustable) saddle that has to be replaced as the horse physically develops can be costly.

But frankly? That is exactly what you sign up for when you decide to own a horse.

Saddle fit is never a one-time, "set-it-and-forget-it" topic in a horse's life.

It is an ongoing, dynamic process because a horse's body will continue to change throughout their entire life due to age, fitness, season, and diet.

So let’s be clear, If your horse’s job involves being ridden, no matter how much or how little, protecting them from physical distress isn't a bonus or an optional upgrade.

Proper saddle fit is a fundamental pillar of basic equine welfare and that responsibility falls squarely on us as owners.
