The Budgie Nest Melksham

The Budgie Nest Melksham I'm truly obsessed with all things budgie! I love to support others to have happy, healthy feathered friends. I'm a responsible breeder. Chirpy, healthy chicks!

I breed small numbers, allowing me time to hand-tame, train & acclimatise them in my home.

Not that there's a recurring theme here! Look out for Pony! πŸ™ˆπŸ€£

These are all enjoying their Pak Choi today.

Pak Choi has lots of benefits:

Vitamin Rich:
It provides essential Vitamin A for immune health, Vitamin C for tissue repair, and Vitamin K for healthy blood clotting.

Low in Oxalates:
Unlike spinach, it won't interfere with their ability to absorb calcium.

Hydration: The high water content keeps them hydrated, while the crunchy stems offer great enrichment.

I can't believe it stays in the coconut! 🀣

Sorry close your eyes if you're faint-hearted! 🀣 Well guys, Walt, he's one of my absolute faves but my, he likes to play away! He's at it again, with Dot this time! πŸ™ˆπŸ€£ An absolute little lethario, I think I should have called him Rupert Campbell-Black! 🀣

Every Saturday and Sunday are Iodine days here, forever! All budgies should be given Iodine (I use Lugols 15%) for two consecutive days every week for life. The dosage is 1 drop to 500ml in their drinking water. It's very important it's only 1 drop as you can overdose.

I don't give any vegetables or wet food for those two days to ensure they drink well. But you can include some dried herbs or whole, including shell, hard-boiled egg. Egg is a fantastic source of minerals and vitamins. Please take special note, these foods are great if fed on the Iodine days but shouldn't be given in excess.

I also have specific Iodine blocks in their cages too. BUT these are not enough on their own.

Iodine is crucial for budgies because it is essential for the proper functioning of their thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism, growth, and other vital bodily functions; a deficiency in Iodine can lead to a condition called goiter, where the thyroid gland enlarges and causes breathing difficulties due to pressure on the windpipe. It's particularly important for budgies as they are more susceptible to Iodine deficiency than other birds.

When breeding, deficiency can lead to the hen or c**k plucking the feathers from their chicks. Deficiency can also lead to infertility.

Key points about Iodine and budgies:

Thyroid function:
Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormones, which control metabolism, body temperature, and other important bodily processes.

Goiter:
A lack of Iodine leads to an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), which can compress the trachea and cause breathing difficulties, often noticeable as clicking or whistling sounds.

Susceptibility:
Budgies are considered particularly vulnerable to Iodine deficiency compared to other bird species.

Diet concerns:
If a budgie is fed a diet lacking in Iodine sources, they can develop a deficiency.

So, as always, 1 drop in 500 ml of drinking water, two consecutive days per week. Made fresh daily. πŸ˜‰πŸ€—

Constance & Benny's chicks are just truly adorable, I'm so chuffed with them in every way. Amazing personalities and just beautiful, well, I know I'm biased. They do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what do you think? 🀣😍

S76 controls red mites, northern mites, feather mites, blood parasites, blood sucking lice, flies and roundworms and can be used neat directly on the skin for scaly face, too. It's totally safe for all, including breeding pairs, chicks and during a moult. Mites, especially in aviary and shed situations, can be a real problem and are common.

Symptoms of worms, mites and lice can include:

Wheezing
Clicking
Sneezing
Coughing
Neck stretching
Nostril discharge
Open mouth breathing
Excessive beak wiping
Itching

S76 as a precautionary measure:

βœ…οΈ Dilute 1ml in 200 ml of drinking water, two consecutive days per month, every month.
βœ…οΈ Remove all water sources by 22:00 the night before.
βœ…οΈEnsure no other sources of hydration like vegetables and fruit are fed.
βœ…οΈ It also works diluted in their bath water, for external mites, absorbed through the skin. So, I fill their baths with diluted S76, too.
❗️S76 is only active for 7-8 hours so it must be made fresh, daily.

This precautionary measure has meant I've never had any experience of parasites in all the years I've kept birds. So I would highly recommend it.

S76 as a treatment:

If your budgie is showing any signs of infestation or, it's the first time you've treated them, you spread the treatment over a course of four weeks to ensure the whole life cycle of the parasite is covered.

The initial treatment is three consecutive days the first week and then two days each week for the next three weeks.

To treat scaly mites, apply it, undiluted, using a cotton bud, directly to the affected areas daily for one week, then twice weekly for three more weeks. Being careful to avoid the eyes and nostrils. Full recovery is expected within four weeks, but prolonged treatments may be necessary for severe infestations.

❗️Please take note, I'm not a vet. If you're concerned about your budgie please consult an Avian vet to get the proper diagnosis and correct treatment.

Alternative treatments:

Ivermectin can also be used, it's a spot on treatment that has to be placed directly on an unfeathered area. If your budgie is tame and doesn't mind being held, this is a simple, fast-acting option.

❗️A cautionary note. For most budgies, being caught and held stresses them. This can lead to budgies losing trust in us, a trust that takes so much time to build.

❗️It's of high importance to ensure cages, equipment and toys are washed and disinfected. F10 disinfectant surface spray with insecticide kills mites as well as viruses. πŸ˜‰

A bit later post today. Eeks, it's my birthday today and I've been unwrapping and reading! I'm such a lucky girl! πŸ₯³πŸŽπŸ₯°

A birthday wouldn't be a birthday though, without some new additions to my flock family! So, here are my new gals. All exhibitions. I just love an exhibition, they melt my heart in every way, looks and personality. πŸ€—

You gave me fantastic names for my boy, I've got enough suggestions to name all of the boys now! πŸ˜‰ You'll meet them soon! πŸ€—πŸ¦

I never seem to get as many suggestions for girls names, can you help me out? I need a name for every single one of these! πŸ€”πŸ₯°πŸ¦

03/06/2026

Eeks, meet Flavia, it means golden girl. This was a suggestion I had a while ago and I kept hold of it, thank you. 😊

She's a birthday pressie, too. πŸ€—πŸ₯³πŸ₯°

Flavia is a golden face cinnamon sky blue exhibition and I've paired her with my stud muffin, Marvin, a sky blue spangle exhibition. πŸ˜πŸ˜‰

She's already in and out of the nestbox so I have strong hopes for these, two.

What do you think? Good pairing? πŸ€”πŸ£
