“Scared he might hurt her?”

I understand why people might be wary when they see a dog Bandit's size.

He's big. He's powerful. And to someone who doesn't know him, he might look intimidating.

But this is the side of him I get to see every day. ❤️

The Dogue de Bordeaux has a long history as a working breed, with roles that included guarding and protecting.

And watching Bandit with my daughter, I sometimes wonder if he's still doing just that very naturally.

Only now, he's not guarding an estate or protecting livestock.

He's her giant red shadow. Her very own bodyguard.

Tell me, does your dog have a special little human they're always keeping close? ❤️👇

Bandit was a VERY rebellious puppy. 😂

I always knew I didn't want to put him in a standard crate. He was going to be a huge dog, and I just didn't feel comfortable confining him to such a small space.

But we still needed somewhere safe for him.

And more importantly, somewhere he could learn to switch off.

So we chose a large playpen instead.

After walks, he'd go in here with his bed and we'd give him some quiet time to settle.

It wasn't about punishing him or keeping him out of the way.

It was about teaching him that he didn't always have to be doing something.

He had space to move around, but he also had boundaries. And over time, this became his safe space.

The best part?

Years later, he still chooses to go in there and sleep. 🥹🐾

I'm not saying a playpen is better than a crate. Different dogs need different things, and crates can be brilliant for many dogs.

Especially if they are jumpers!!

This is simply what worked for our giant, slightly chaotic French Mastiff. 😂

🐾 Want to know which pen we use?

I've linked the same brand in my shop linkst in my bio.

Just a heads up: it may not be the exact same size/model as Bandit's, so make sure you check the dimensions before ordering.

When you both have to have Vaseline UK Official on your poor crusty noses 🤣💪 Happy beginning of illness invested months!...

and as you can see Bandit does not care what we look like ❤️🫶

He hates the Vaseline UK Official though!! Had to bribe him!
